  • World Without End--Ken Follett

Wow. What a pleasurable book. This book returns to the same small English town as the Pillars of the Earth, only two hundred years later in the middle ages. (1300-ish). Don't let the size of the book scare you off, it is easy to read and hard to put down. If you enjoy epic novels or historical fiction, this is a great choice. This story is set against the backdrop of the bubonic plague, power struggles within the Catholic church, the building of a major bridge, as well as universal themes of good versus evil and unrequieted love.

    This one comes highly recommended.

Pillars of the Earth is actually an Oprah book. I read Pillars years ago and it has always stayed with me. It would probably make my top ten book list of all time. Since Pillars was published, I have read anything and everything else Follett has written. If I had to single out a single author as favorite, he would be it. I should disclose here, however, that The Pillars of the Earth and World without End are VERY different from his normal WWII/spy type novels.

You do not have to read Pillars before World Without End as each novel stands on its own. There are references to people, but I believe there is about 200 years between the two novels. Pillars is set against the backdrop of the building of a major cathedral while World centers on the descendants of the hero in the exact place two hundred-ish years later.
