Not to be petty or anything, but the Ducks are No. 5 in the BCS.

Actually, the BCS is a load of crap except when the Ducks are No. 5.

That's great for the ducks and everyone else - you don't understand. KU has NEVER been in the BCS. KU is NOT a football school, KU is a basketball school. KU hasn't been 7-0 since some of our current players were six years old or younger. KU and good football season don't belong in the same sentence.

So other schools can be as excited as they like about their BCS ranking - we're just excited we're in it and hope to keep winning!

            Fair question.

Technically, UVa's mascot is the Cavalier. (See Cav Man icon.)

Derived from a line in "The Good Old Song" which goes

"That Good Old Song of Wahoowa,
            We'll sing it o'er and o'er.
It cheers our heart and warms the blood
To hear them shout and roar.
            We come from old Virginia,
Where all is bright and gay.
Let's all join hands and give a yell
            For dear old UVa.

What though the tide of years may roll
            And drift us far apart,
For Alma Mater still there'll be
            A place in ev'ry heart.
In college days we'll sing her praise,
            And so, when far away,
In memory we still shall be
            At the dear old UVa.

            (chant)
            WAHOOWA, WAHOOWA
            UNI-V, VIR-GIN-I-A
            HOO-RAH-RAY, HOO-RAH-RAY
            RAY! RAY! U-V-A!"

the term "wahoo" became a sort of nickname for the sports teams.

It's also a fish that can drink three times its weight.

Anyway, UVa's teams are known as the Cavaliers, the Cavs, the Wahoos, and the 'Hoos. I know it might seem confusing, but it's a tradition that makes perfect sense to the Hoos of Hooville.

Regarding the VT rivalry, here is what wikipedia has to say about it:
Some from outside the state are surprised to learn that the rivalry is a bitter one. Former Ohio State quarterback and football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said in 2004 that he "never realized how much those people hate each other." He went on to say "when I was down in Blacksburg, I said some nice things about Al Groh and it was like I had turned my back on them."

Virginia-Virginia Tech was one of six in-state rivalries that ESPN writer Bomani Jones attempted to explain by writing:
“ Every state has a flagship campus, typically called the University of Your State, whose student body and alumni feel they are entitled to, well, pretty much whatever they want within state lines. That same state probably has another school -- usually denoted by the words State, Tech, or A&M -- that gets treated by the former like some Bonaduce-headed stepchild. These rivalries are usually pretty intense -- and can get pretty ugly. ”

            — Bomani Jones, ESPN

I would like to also point out that we are WINNING the Commonwealth Challenge.

Sorry Cheri. They sure did make it respectable at the end! Sometimes that makes it harder to see them lose!

Re: How did your football teams do?

Yeh - it stunk but an 11-1 season and a bid to a good bowl game are nothing to be sad about. Mizzou played better three out of the four quarters and we just ran out of time. As much as it pains me to say I'll be cheering for Mizzou next week against OU b/c we need to prove that a team in the north can win the Big 12.

Hopefully we still get a BCS bowl.

Well...another Iron Bowl has come and gone. Auburn moved on to the next hand, making history by beating Alabama for the 6th time in a row. I and my son are pretty disgusted today. My poor son hasn't yet experienced a victory over Auburn that he can remember.

Re: How did your football teams do?

BTW, for those of you unfamiliar with the Alabama-Auburn game, Alabama could go into THE game with a completely winning or completely losing season and neither would matter if they beat Auburn. It's sad.

                            Stella,

It was sad wasn't it? I felt like this was the year we could beat our backwoods brethren. Even more sad though was letting myself feel after the game that this just may be how it's always going to be with Tech (in footballl anyway). We'll still whip their @sses in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, swimming, wrestling, volleyball, etc. And they'll still become Carolina fans during basketball season. But it hurts.

ETA: Were you at the game? I was at home but I've read that Casteen and the entire athletic department essentially made it a Tech lovefest. From what I've read, it wasn't just a classy moment of silence for Tech slain, but was pre-game and halftime homage to the whole school [not related to horrific event]. And really weird stuff, like having a special ceremony at half-time to pay tribute to Tech's NFL great Bruce Smith. Why on earth would you allow your rival school to spend halftime at your stadium honoring one of their alums [for his athletic achievements]. Totally baffling. Then Virginia has old governor Kaine [did he really graduate from Tech or does he just have a man crush on them?] popping up everywhere giving the rah, rah for Tech.

Anyway, back to regularly scheduled programming.

Since the Ducks lost their quarterback, Dixon, they've completed decompensated. They're pathetic now.

Crazy season is right - there are going to be a ton of KU fans cheering for Mizzou next Saturday, our biggest rival, only because it benefits us in our bowl bid if OU loses.

A great season, we got to watch KU football on Saturday (a game that mattered) and KU basketball on Sunday - fun, fun!
