When I was dating DH and moving to his town, I bought a car there. As I'm PAYING FOR THE CAR IN FULL, the dumbass salesman is making small talk, asking why I'm moving here. He gets around to what DH does and says "Wow! You're really moving up in the world, aren't you?" Jackass.

My husband was at the dermatologist Wednesday getting some (non-worrisome) alien thing removed from his side. He put "physician" on the paperwork, but the derm never asked what kind.

She takes it off and says "Of course we'll send it to pathology just to be sure. It'll be about two weeks--I don't think the pathologists work very hard over the holidays." (!!!)
"Oh? That's funny, we don't think the dermatologists work very hard EVER."

I said, "YOU DID NOT SAY THAT OUT LOUD TO HER!" and he said, "No, of course not! Who cares? I thought it was pretty funny, though."

He tells these stories with such a dry humor it always cracks me right up.

(And of course it was read by his own practice and was in a batch done by noon the next day.)
Married to a hematopathologist seven years out of training.

From my mom after DH suggested that she requests a specific anesthesiologist for her gall bladder surgery, "Why? Don't they just put in the IV and leave?" (Yes, it took him 4 years to learn how to put in an IV).

Random mom at daycare, "Thank god your husband was at the delivery instead of mine. Last time mine totally freaked out." (Should have seen the look daycare director gave us)

Bank manager after learning DH's occupation, "Don't be surprised when randon women give him hugs in the supermarket, they are just very happy with their epidurals." (Um, whatever crazy lady.)

The conversation goes something like this:

Them: "So what does your husband do?"
Me: "He's a resident in ophthalmology..."
Them: "Oh! ...and yet you wear glasses"

DH wears glasses and gets this one All. The. Time.

Seriously? I actually think that is the stupidest comment on here. I'm shocked that more than one person would have even thought that - yet alone said it out loud. Absurd.

Oh honey that's the typical response I get from people. Always involving glasses or lasik. I used to tell people he's a medical resident but DH corrected me?? Says it implies he's going into medicine (versus ophtho?)? It sure was a lot simpler.

DH coached me to say he's an eye surgeon. For some reason that cuts down on the "confusion". I (we) get a ton of LASIK comments as well.

It really illustrates the average persons lack of understanding about medicine in general.

Along the glasses line I get lots of people asking when dd1 can stop wearing glasses. I tell them when she switches to contacts

And I did have someone query as to why we don't drive new cars since dh is a doctor. Ummm, cause we have 6 kids and he just finished 32nd grade moron.

These are some dumb comments, but at least no one warned you that your husband would inevitably cheat and leave you! I'd rather someone think I was gold digging than have gotten that comment (twice now!)!

Lol, very true. I think that was the implication when someone suggested that I really trust dh to let him be an OB.

I get it - sort of along the same lines as when DH was an EKG tech before med school and my brother was all "oh, you get to see boobs all day, awesome" and DH was like "NO NOT AWESOME. If I see 50 sets each day, about 49.5 of them are ones I'd NEVER want to see again."

Now I know the same can be said for OB - too clinical and impersonal for it to ever be anything other than that!! Also, they are professionals!! Come on people. If people just stopped to *think* about it for a second, they'd understand why that is the case!

I think the only idiotic conversation I've had was with the parent of one of DD2s friends. DD2 was about 11 and had received a pair of cheap, shitty boots from Justice for her birthday.

"Where did you find those boots for DD2? Brittany really wants a pair, too, but my husband doesn't make doctor money."

"I found them on-sale at Justice for $10. DH is a resident, so he doesn't make doctor money, either. Actually, average resident pay is about half that of a truck driver."

Her husband is a long haul trucker. She quickly STFU.
