  • New to site - military wife - San Antonio or bust '07

I am so excited to have found this site! Nice to know I am not the only one going through what I go/went though.

A little late on my part as my DH has already completed his urology residency. He is just finishing an unsponsored (military talk) year-long fellowship after 2 years of being staff/chief at Wright Patterson AFB (Dayton, OH). We just got the official orders indicating that we are headed back to Lackland AFB (where he did his residency) until his his
    commitment is complete (2012!)

I grew up in Los Angeles but have lived in many cities after graduating from college - Atlanta, Boston, Nashville, San Antonio, Dyton, OH and currently, Iowa City, Iowa. I am have been a SAHM for the past 3 yrs due to the moving around. Though, I look forward to going back to work FT once we get settled. I usually work in hospital administration/
operations. MY DH and I met while he was in med school and I was in grad school. After 6 long years of dating (and the dreadful 2nd year surgery year) we married in 2000. We have 3 children 1 boy, 2 girls: Bobby (5yo), Charlie (4yo) and Sam (1yo this month).

OK, long enough intro for now..
I am exctied to be part of this board and hope to be a resource for some, expecially the military spouses. I also look forward to your advise stories.

    Happy April!

Well, you have at lesat three of us already here in San Antonio! Welcome aboard!

My husband is an Army Child Neurologist, currently IMing with me from Baghdad.

We're in the Lavaca neighborhood, immediately next to the King William district, downtown.

Have your hubby ask his people when urology will be folded into BAMC so that you can house-hunt accordingly! No need to be out at SeaWorld if you don't need to be! (unless you want to be!)

Thanks for the welcomes! I stepped away for lunch/kids/ clean and came back to the notes, Thanks!

                now back to househunting...

DCJen, I think they will be going back and forth btwn Lackland and Randolph... Living in the middle worked out last time (we lived in the Castle hills area last time) Though I would love to be in the King William or Alamo heights or terrel hills area.. things may have changed and my DH just informed me he does not want an older home?? go figure, i think they are better built and definitely have more character. Our big hurdle is to sell our home in Ohio (on the market for over a year now) before we start seriously looking. Our realtor is looking into some rentals with ST leases for us so we will at least have a place to stay once we get there. How much more time do you have in?

We have 7 more years- he went to USUHS and then did a peds residency and the neurology fellowship.

There are some really nice place for rent in KW right now. (maybe once he's down here he'll want to stay.)

One of the docs that we're friendly with had a place in Terrell Hills that he was trying to sell- he was willing to rent it- but I don't know if he sold it yet or not.

The BRAC is impacting the various departments at varying speeds. Commuting to Randolph is never fun.

                  Welcome aboard!

anyone moving to Dayton, feel free to contact me, I ended up loving it (I initially cried about going to the midwest) and wouldn't ind going back for payback...I scoped out restaurants, shopping, things to do for kids, etc...

Thanks again for the many welcomes.. its nice to come to...

DCjen, oops, I meant BAMC not Randolph commute.. my dh said he'll be doing both for a bit, and he isn't up to stuff about a permanent transition to BAMC... you have me intrigued about the LaVaca area.. there is one on the market on Florida and if it is stil for sale when we are ready maybe we can get a good deal??? (too busy of a street?) did you do a fixer upper or already renovated?

There are TONS for sale in Lavaca right now- Florida is a really busy street- it's where you get off from 281/37. Carolina is bad for that reason, also.

There's some bigger houses coming on the market very soon (people try to get everything ready for the King William Fair since we gets a few thousand extra people through the hood.

Ours is theorectically 'done' - but we're having a new HVAC installed Monday and the entire place needs to be painted (thankfully the outside is brick).

There's a gorgeous rental available on Adams in KW. I can get the realtor info if you'd like. It's one of the bigger Victorians. I hang out w/ the gang form King William Realty regularly so I have a pretty good feel for what's going on line in the 'hoods. (3/4 of them live in Lavaca so I'm guessing that's a good sign!) (and the fourth lives just south of here in another up and coming older neighborhood. Oh and government Hill over by Ft. Sam is really moving and shaking these days. Apparently there's a few people in San Antonio who don't want to have to sit on 281 or 410 to get to work!

ooh, yeah there are no reasonable rentals on-line right now, please do get that name(s).

I will also look at gov hill, too. What would the commute be to Lackland be like, though? we're trying to avoid 281, really liked the older neighborhoods East off the 10 (Castle Hills, whispering oaks, Elm creek, etc...) though none on the market right now... BUT there seem to be some great deals out there in the stone oak areas (too new for me, but need to think of re-sale, since we've had our current house on the market for more than a year) ugh! thanks for being my insider in SA...
