his start date is July 1, report date Jul 5. I hope to move into a place for just 6 mos (if that).

Did I tell you he did a civilian(un-sponsored) fellowhip year? So he had to go thouhg the whole discharge dance last year. I just hope we stil get the July bonus..

Yup- This year I plan to check out the Oysterbake- lots of kid stuff apparently.

So, did the unsponsored fellowship add more years or just more debt? We have a friend who was offered the civilian neonatalogy fellowship two years in a row and she held out for the sponsored one- the AF finally decided to fund it the third year.

The bonus- my husband negotiated to get both the July bonus and the October bonus in July-. I'd think you'd get them since they're applicable for the following year. Unless he got the bonus while doing the fellowship in which case the AF could be jerks. I just signed the contracts for the bonuses last week. What really blows is that he was supposed to take the orals for Child neurology this summer but since he's deployed we have to wait for them to reschedule it.

PS- looks like we have identically aged 3 yos! Nikolai turned three on the 18th.

I was adamant about taking a sponsored fellowship, bc I did NOT want to buy anymore time in (we have a LOOOOOOng story/history about getting screwed every time going back to residency)

sponsored bought us more time in and i think it was 2 payback for 1 sponsored year, so that was a definite NO. unsponsored TOTALLY discharged us (no military benefits whatsoever) - so we went to civilian resident/fellowship pay, we prepared for that.. here's the kicker, even though you are unsponsored and totally discharged, the military makes you sign a documents saying you will not moonlight!!!!!!! Bagdad - how are you holding up are you sahm or do you get a little respite working outside of the home?

Yeah- the military doesn't like moonlighters, especially during training.

I did the SAHM thing for a little over a year. It was the hardest job I've ever had. I'm back to work at about 60% time at a methadone clinic in town. (My background is social services.)

The Iraq thing- well, once you get up to 50 posts, we have a few sections where we discuss the nitty-gritty details of medical life. I have posted there. So far it's going pretty well considering. We've been able to video conference, audio conference and IM (at least one of them) almost every day.

                  egghead,
sry, took me long to reply, i didn't know how to ( about spurs/maves/playoffs ????
I did though get a chance to read you intro, and whew, I can't wait until we get past the 50 post mark.. you're not alone... med school/ residency/fellowship suck as a spouse; having no supportive family or friends around, just make it worse.

i'm glad to have found this forum, thanks for the greeting...

BTw I have a good friend and her Med spous move to AuClair or LeClair WIS, is that close to where your'e headed?

I'm another San Antonio military medical spouse (AF). We're about to go from one year out of residency (it was sponsored - civilian) and "normal" life (whatever that means :P ) to a one year, unsponsored fellowship. We've worked it so we're keeping our house and, so, we'll be leaving this summer and back in a year's time.

We do seem to be growing in our SA numbers lately!

Tabula rasa: thanks for the welcome...congrats on the fellowship, unsponsored is great bc you don't accrue payback time, but sucks becasue you go to civilian pay (which, I'm sure you already know ) did you rent out your home already?

egghead, I guess Eau Claire is it...my friend and her family are moving there Jul '08. she's a blast, always lifts my spirits and makes me see the silver lining... I'm from LA, went to UCLA, where in Santa Monica are you staying? how long? it should be a good client site. when I consulted I got stcok in SMALL rural towns... We're headed out to LA in May... have fun

                          Thanks agian for the welcome!
