  • Introducting peony!

Hi everyone! I started posting on another thread, but at another poster's suggestion I thought I'd introduce myself here. I'm a newlywed of about 4 months, and I'm currently a post-bacc premedical student and my husband is a 3rd yr med student. We live in the Chicago area and are 24 and 28, respectively. I was previously in a PhD program in clinical psychology but left with my MS because of a bunch of reasons--mostly because I realized that I am very clinically-focused and a research degree was not a good match for me. I'm really excited about going into medicine, and I'll likely do a peds-focused speciality that deals with acute care. I also have interests in radiology and anesthesiology, so we shall see!

3rd year has been a huge adjustment for my DH because he's an MD/PhD student and has been out of the game doing research for a while. At this point he's not sure whether he'll do a residency or a post-doc when he's done with med school. Our biggest issue right now is when to have children (which is what I posted about on the other thread). It's something that we talk about almost every day, and it's very hard to fathom waiting 6 yrs until I'm in residency. It definitely doesn't seem like there's any great time to do it, but we're determined to make it work, whenever it happens!

I'm glad you found us! My DH is also an MD/PhD student about to reenter med school for his 3rd year. We're also expecting major adjustments in the next year when leaves research mode. I am calling this the calm before the storm, since our schedule is pretty easy right now and 3rd year will likely be a huge awakening.

We've got 2 DD's and it is manageable, but Tara is right about the best time being 9 months after conception. There will always be pros and cons on timing.

What specifically are you most concerned with? Childcare when you start school, finical issues, being parents and full time students.... ? Can you go into what areas you are most concerned about? Sometimes there are the easiest solutions to a problem that you just can't see because of all the stress and worry!

I would like to add.... I became friends with two ladies back when we were living in the Caribbean during the 20 months we lived there. Not only were these women successful medical students, but they were SINGLE MOMS raising their children in a foreign country with no family... totally alone. I was and still am so inspired by the hard work and dedication it took for these ladies to make it work!

                              Re: Introducting peony!

                              Hey moonlight,

I'm most concerned with getting to spend enough time with the baby and not going nuts when I'm trying to do well in med school and be a great mom. Not so concerned financially--we have quite a bit of savings, and there's always loans or parental help (our parents had a lot of financial help when they had us, and they have said they'll be willing to help out). Childcare is huge, but my MIL has offered to move close to us wherever we go to help with that, and if that doesn't work I will *definitely* shop around. I don't think that I could be happy knowing my child was in a crappy daycare, but I also think kids can get a lot out of them socially if they're older (> 1.5 or so).

There are other minor concerns like not getting to form close relationships w/ my fellow students because I won't be able to spend much time w/ them out of class, but the biggest one by far is the "balancing" issue. One thing I've been working really hard on lately is improving my study skills--which are already pretty good--so I don't do anything last minute. I can't imagine trying to cram for an exam while staying up with a crying baby.
