My husband is going to be going to med school in the Caribbean (probably Ross) I was just wondering if anyone here has had any experience. I will be going down there with our almost 1yr old. What is there for Moms and children to do? How often will he be able to spend time with Daddy? I am just trying to figure out what to expect. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

not much. LOL! if you have money, you can island hop. stay close to campus for your living...it will be more expensive, but there will be more things to do, and more people around.
we went to ross. left for the island with a 2 month old....left for the states, with a 18 month old and a 6 month old. 16 month of suck.
check out valueMD. take it with a HUGE grain of salt. and also, student doctor network. still, with a grain of salt, but not as big. lol!~shacked up with an ob/gyn~

I also read that they were moving, but I am not sure if it is the entire main campus or an accelerated program campus....I would have to read over the Ross (wow we got accepted) book. I am just really worried that there will be nothing for us to do. I am not high maintenance at all, but I do appreciate a nice day at the park or something. I hate being trapped inside. To add to it all my other two boys from a previous marriage have to stay in the states. I can not take them legally....KILLS ME! I just don't want to get down there and be super depressed!

I'm not familiar with Caribbean med schools, but I wanted to say hello and welcome.
rainbabies: I also heard something about Ross in a different location. DF and I have a friend who started at Ross in January and his fiancee is also now living in Dominica with him. Through her Facebook updates (of which there are WAY too many), she keeps mentioning that Ross is paying for both of them (and some others) to visit somewhere in the Bahamas this weekend. Something about trying to get the PACE students to go there next semester? Not sure what that all means, I guess more research or info from our members w/ SOs at Ross would be needed.Event coordinator, wife and therapist to a peds attending

I know that this is kinda personal, however I am sure y'all will understand. I married my ex not knowing him well enough....it was a train wreck. From this relationship I got two little boys that I love more than my breath. I am not sure if their sperm donor (doesn't deserve the title of dad) will let them visit. I am going to ask....I am sure he will say no, however, he has not paid any of his child support or any of the other things in our court order. I am hoping to use this as leverage. I know it is going to kill me to leave them, esp. if they can't visit. Then again I know they will be taken care of (my parents) my oldest is going to be in Kindergarten, I am so torn.

Hi and welcome! Moving so that your DH can attend Caribbean med school is really hard for everyone that does it. My DH attended med school in the Caribbean (and I went along for the ride), but on a different island. Although on our island there was WAY more to do I was still board, in the house, lonely, and counting the days until it was time to move. It was a huge culture shock for me and I never really got the point where I accepted it. Looking back I wish that I had just gone with the flow a little better and tried to enjoy myself. I know it's my husband's calling to be a doctor. In the end I can say it was worth it. But I had my fair share of days when I couldn't take another day of it and wanted to move back to the states. BTW many wives and girlfriends did just that. I ended up being one of very few wives that stuck it out all five semesters on the island.Wife to PGY5. Mommy to baby girl born 11/2009. Cat mommy since 2002
