  • Soon-to-be Texas med-school wife

    Hello all,

My fiance spends so much time on the Student Doctor Network, that I figured maybe I should find my own online space

We both just started our senior year at school in Oklahoma, and are getting married in June. We're both from Texas, and have been dating for 5.5 years. My fiance has always known he wanted to be a doctor (both of his parents are, though his mom no longer practices) and he is in the throes of the interviewing process right now.

I'm really excited for him, but at the same time, I'm scared to death! I know his choice of career will be great for us down the road, but the next 8-9 years are a little scary at this point.

Right now, we are focusing on Texas med schools as they are quite a bit cheaper. He had or has interviews at the 5 places he applied, and we are hoping he gets into Dallas and at least one in Houston. I'm in the middle of the job interviewing process (not a great market right now, obviously, but I am an IT major, so there are opportunities) and we're not sure how I'm going to be able to balance job offers and deadlines with the fact that he wont know where he is going for awhile--probably Dec. or Jan.

Anyway, that is our little story and where we are right now--I'm looking forward to contributing and hearing any advice you all have!

Wow! You sound like me! DH and I went to OU for undergrad, then UTSW in Dallas for his medical school. We're back here in OKC for his residency. I was also an MIS major to complete the deja-vu!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, and good luck with the interviewing and job search process! I started out working at a banking software company in Dallas called Argo that recruits pretty heavily at OU. Not sure if they're hiring this year with the banking industry being what it is, but they used to extend several offers each semester to OU grads. There can be a lot of travel involved, though, for certain projects. If you're not involved with MISSA yet, you should look into it. They do dinners the night before the interview where you can meet the interviewers and some of the employees and ask questions.

WHOA! Creepy. Really creepy. UTSW is my fiance's top choice. And I am currently the MISSA Corporate Events Chair. Would you mind e-mailing me? Do I need to post my email for you to be able to do that?

PS--Is my picture working? I cannot see it, but apparently it is uploaded in the control panel...

                  I'm a UTSWer, too!

My DH spent a LONGGGGGGGGG time at UTSW. In his usual commitment to finding the hardest way to skin the cat, he was a mud-phud. Nerds-R-Us!

                  Good luck!!

My fiance was considering the md/phd route for a bit there, but decided it wasn't for him (and us!) Thank goodness. He is considering the combined MD/MPH route if he gets in there, though. He thinks it will help him make his way to a career in infectious disease...his dream job would be working at the CDC.

Hi there! Welcome. We are in TX. Did the Houston stint for med school and can help out if you guys end up there. DH decided on ID (did medpeds before that) and is active with IDSA...although very early in the game, if your DF has any Qs - bring them on.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I sent you a private message with my email address. You can access them from the box in the upper right corner of the screen. Glad to hear you're already involved in MISSA - it was a really helpful program for me.
