Not really - no need to learn some of this stuff until you need to. Ya know - it is like learning all about a root canal before you ever need one.

Med Peds = Double Residency as in Internal Medicine and Pedi. Why go through one residency program when you can combine two and make it more fun...for all involved.

IDSA = Infectious Disease Society of America

Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Oh, gosh. It wasn't THAT bad! The one nice thing was that it was a full-ride. Whoo hoo! And it gave me a fantastic perspective on his NSG residency. Since he spent four years in med school and 5 years on his PhD, even a long residency seemed short by comparison!!

Just wanted to throw out there we've had two friends work at the CDC and neither were MD/PhD's but they both did have their MD/MPH's. Oh and one did an ID residency and one did peds but had done ID research during med school.

Welcome! DH went to UTSW -- MD/PhD program. He's now a 3rd year at Children's Medical Center Dallas. It was a long 9 years but I'm glad he did it. We have no loans (other than our house).

Wow--thanks for all of the great info. Maybe MD/PhD wouldn't be so bad, but we both agreed that we didn't want him to spend that long in school. We want a relatively large family (I'm the oldest of 5 kids, he's the oldest of 6), and I'd like to stay home someday, so we thought the plain ol' med school/residency route with maybe a fellowship thrown in there would probably work out best.

Having no loans is pretty incredible, though. We got scholarships for undergrad, and I'll be working full-time for at least the duration of his med school, so we are hoping we can live simply and pay the tuition straight out of my salary. That is the main reason we are focusing so hard on Texas--the tuition is incredible (especially compared to out-of-state tuition and private schools). I guess we'll see how that goes, though!

I have so many questions--I'm so glad I found you guys!

Being in school did not stop us from starting a family. I was the breadwinner, but we went ahead and had 2 kids in our first two years of marriage. LOL 3rd was his graduation gift!

That's another thing we are both unsure about--what is it like to have kids during that time period?

We just figured we would decide if we were ready when we get to that point, but wow, it seems like it would be really hard.

Welcome to the group of amazing women and men who all have BTDT stories to keep you sane, and suggestions to help when drawing a blank. About the kids thing - there are some pre-existing threads on the timing of kids, (one that I myself started also) and those who have lived through MS and residency (with children) can probably answer best in that area. Please be a regular around here, and post often!!

Welcome and congrats! I met DH spring of our senior year of college, when he had decided where he was going, so I didn't witness the whole interview process.
However, I understand it's expensive and time consuming. What's new?

I don't want to scare you, but I have a couple friends (very bright, good students from prestigious undergraduate schools) who have had trouble getting into medical school. I don't say that to scare you but rather put things into perspective. You can't take anything for granted. On the flip side, while he had top grades from a great but unknown undergrad, DH's MCAT score was apparently not so impressive... and he's at his 1st choice school. Hard to predict how things will turn out, so it's good to keep an open mind.

This year will be rough on your fiance, but he's lucky to have you!

                              Congrats again and welcome!

Should I keep this thread going, or post this somewhere else?

J applied ASAP in June and has or had 7 interviews (5 Texas schools) and 1 rejection (Vanderbilt)--hasn't heard from the other schools (all out-of-state) yet. Is this good, average...?

To be honest, I am a little scared. He has an almost perfect GPA and what I think is a good MCAT, but he's not from a disadvantaged background, so I know that wont help. He's got to get into at least ONE Texas school...right?
