  • Yippee!

    Hello!

The verdict is in, and thus web site is GREAT! I have been perusing it for a few days now, and I think that it is about time that I introduce myself. My name is Kelley and I am about to start my second year of law school and my first year in a master's program in political science. My husband has just begun his third year of residency in neurosurgery. We live in Pittsburgh, Pa and moved here from Charlottesville, Virginia jusst over two years ago. What a trip this has been!

I must applaud Kelly's piece on medical marriages in the newsletter, as I could completely relate!! Although we do not have children yet, we do have two very big dogs and a house and I am one of those people who gets lonely very easily. After two absolutely miserable years of wanting to give up and move back to New York where my family and many of my friends live, I finally realized that I have to have my OWN life here. It took two years of therapy, Paxil, and career counseling, but I am finally on the road to well-being. (Sorry to be so open during my first post, but I think that it is important for others out there to know that things get tough, but you CAN over-come!)

I actually hated law school, but after a summer to think about it (and get away from it), I have decided to go back and pursue something where I can actually help people. This is good, as most law students just want to sue doctors and make big bucks, so the jobs are there for those who don't want that lifestyle. I am okay making little money and actually feeling good about myself at the end of the day!

Also, I am in the process of starting up a spouses' group here in Pittsburgh. I REALLY do not want ANYONE else to go through what I went through, and so I am trying to do something to support others like me! I am getting TONS of ideas from you and from this site, so THANK YOU!!

Can't wait to get to know more of you better!!

      Kelley,

Welcome. I am so glad you found this site. It really is a great place to find support and hear from others in your shoes.

My husband is a first year resident in anesthesiology and I am a lawyer. I graduated from law school in May of 2002, and I am currenty clerking for a federal judge. My clerkship ends in a couple of weeks, and then I will be practicing labor and employment law in a firm.

I am so glad you decided to stick it out in law school. First year is terrible, but it gets much better second and third year. You are right, there are great opportunities to help people in this field. It is a shame that a few bad apples have ruined the reputation of the profession for the rest of us.

      Best wishes!

      Emily

        Kelley,

Welcome to the board! It's been a great place for me to get support as not many people really understand what's it's like to be a medical spouse. I am the wife of a first-year ID fellow, and am in the process of getting adjusted to my husband's new position, work schedule, etc. I'm glad you're feeling better about things...I had a hard time adjusting to life here in Washington, DC, when we first moved here three years ago. You mentioned New York...are you from there originally? I am, and the first year in DC I found myself running up there often. After a while I settled down and made a life for myself in DC. That's amazing you are pursuing two degrees at once -- good luck!

Glad you found us, and post often.

        Jill

Welcome, Kelley. I am not a lawyer, but I appreciated your perspective on the difficulties of law school. On the bright side you will completely understand if your husband suddenly takes a dislike to medicine and needs a break from it...

            Kelley,

Welcome from another Kell[e]y...and another first year of law school survivor. I work in a permanent judicial clerkship which overall is a pretty good gig. Hubby is a fourth year gen surgery resident in an academic program. We are parents to a precocious 3 year old boy with one on the way in Spring of 2004.

After reading your post, I find myself needing to parrot your comment and some wisdom from the Greatful Dead: "What a long, strange road it's been".

            Welcome aboard.
