  • Hello/Introduction

    Hello all –

I’m new here, and thought I should introduce myself.

I graduated from law school in June and moved across the country with my fiancé for his fellowship. This past summer was extremely hectic with the move, the bar (I passed – woo hoo!), and wedding planning. Unfortunately, now I am bored out of mind (I haven’t found a job here yet) and feeling a bit lonely/depressed at the moment. I suppose I was just looking to find others who dealt with similar circumstances – and well, here I am ☺

Welcome. I moved across the country for my DH (at the time he was my bf) and I was bored as heck before I found a job and a life. You found the right place. What type of fellowship is your DF doing?

Ah - is DF the proper term for fiance... much easier (I obviously have a bit to learn... my smiley didn't turn out as I had hoped either!)

He is doing a XXXXXX - which he seems to really be enjoying. And I agree that I need a job and a life ASAP, I've always been really really busy and I am not loving this down time (although looking for a job is remarkably time consuming, but I can't stand it).

About how long did it take you to find a job (and a life, lol). I am hoping it doesn't take too much longer, but the legal job market isn't great here (or really anywhere) - so I am thinking this could last a bit longer.

Another NSG wife - yay! There aren't many of us on here. Does your DF have his job lined up for July? Endo seems to be the specialty to be in this year.

My husband is doing a skull base fellowship and job pickings are VERY slim!

                Welcome again!

SuzySunshine: Ah I wish it was over in June... it's a two year fellowship. So no idea where we are going next, which I think is part of the reason I am having a hard time at the moment. I suppose there is a chance we could stay where we are if I found a great job (and a life etc), but knowing that this is probably temporary makes me a bit reluctant to really settle in too much here. Do you know where you guys are going yet?

Yeah the job market is a PITA. I moved in June and got my first decent job in Oct, so about four months, but it took a bit longer then that to really feel settled (ie make friends). Its a hard hard thing, but you are in good company here.

oops just read your last sentence... sorry about that. So I guess you don't know for sure yet? I'm sure you will figure it out soon. And yes, from what I hear the same thing is true with DF's specialty - so I have no idea what is going to happen (although I have a feeling that I am going to have to take another bar exam and go through another couple of months of not having a job! I can't wait!).

Well there is another NSG/lawyer couple here too. I forgot Endo was 2 years - at there is an end in sight!

All of the uncertainty does make everything hard. Welcome!

L.Jane: Thank you. I agree that really making friends take quite a while. I have met some really great people out here, but I am pretty sure I will feel somewhat out of place until I find a job. I didn't start looking for one with much enthusiasm until I found out that I passed the bar - which was relatively recently - so I'm likely in for tough couple of months! I know things are actually not that terrible (and I do have wedding planning as an uplifting distraction), but I just have days (like today) when I wonder what I am doing here. Fun times

Welcome -- you just described my life! I was 2 years post-law school and had to quit my job to move and get married right before my hubby started residency this year. I am now sworn into another state but still unemployed which, as I'm sure you know, adds to the boredom and makes it difficult to make friends.

My best advice is to reach out to the other resident's wives -- at the very least, it will give you some people to ask to do stuff when your fiance can't make it due to work. Also, try to find a new hobby (I know it's hard right now because (if you're anything like me) you're a little depressed and logy. I took up cooking (which doesn't help too much in the finding friends department...)

Anyway, welcome! There are lots of people here who know exactly what you're going through!
