Now what happened for you to find us on Christmas Eve?
Nothing exciting, really. My husband actually has this month off, and we just returned from a cruise on Sunday, so we were recovering at home. spotty_dog referred me to this site from another one, so I figured I'd check it out.

Subfertile wife to a PGY1 (aka intern) in Uro. Are you guys looking at 5 or 6 year programs or a mix? We are at a 5 year program as DH will do a fellowship afterwards.
We're hoping for a 5 year, but he did interview with one 6 year that will get ranked in his top 5 probably. He's still a little unsure exactly what he wants to do long term, so a fellowship is a possibility afterward, but for now I'm just hoping he matches! We're a little frustrated because none of the programs he interviewed at seem like perfect matches for us - some places he felt like he fit in better with the residents, some we like the location better, some are better for my career, some are better for his career... In the end we decided to rank them at places that were good overall and that we thought he'd be happy, because I think all the other things we can deal with, but it will be miserable if he isn't happy.

What specialty is your husband looking to match into? The early match has been a little stressful, since his interviews were all so close together, but now that we've survived that part, I'm glad we'll find out early. My career is a little bit tricky, so having the extra time will help me find a job, I hope. I've already contacted several colleagues at universities near the top programs on our list, and I have some pretty good options at those places.

Thanks all for the welcome! We're enjoying this month as much as we can - December was one of the months my husband took off for interviews, not really realizing that most of his interviews would be in November. We took advantage of the time and went on a cruise last week to celebrate our anniversary, and are just relaxing for the next week before we both have to get back to work. We're not huge fans of traveling for holidays, so we had a quick visit with his family earlier today and are enjoying the evening in together. I'm anticipating that he'll be working over holidays for the next several years, so we're enjoying this while we can! This Christmas is a little tough for us, stressed a bit about the match and still a little sad about the miscarriage. Lately I feel like our life is nothing but waiting for things to happen, including residency and a baby, so I'm glad we've gotten some time to relax, and once the match is over we can stop stressing about that. We're on a break right now from fertility treatments, but we'll be starting back up in a few weeks with a new cycle, repeating oral ovulation induction and an IUI, which is what finally got us pregnant the last time (yay, hormones). I've been a little worried that I won't fit in well with other resident wives, not being a SAHM or a mom at all (starting to feel that in med school already), but my husband assured me that several of the wives at the programs he's visited are in the same boat. Anyway, I'll try to peruse the rest of this site and get to know you all more!

You may be surprised how much you have in common with your dude's co-workers, even if you may not jibe with the other spouses.

I miss our residency peeps like crazy and most of my closest friends were the dude's co-workers. Yes, I'm an at-home mom, but I had pretty much nothing in common with 99.9% of the other spouses who were also at-home parents. I hung with one spouse and a bunch of the other residents throughout most of our 4 years there.

Yup, that's me. My profile there is horribly out of date, and I haven't posted stash or FOs in ages, but I like to keep up with friends.

I'm sure that will be the case! A few of my closest friends here are med school wives, and I know I'm going to miss them like crazy. We're trying to match at the same place with one couple, but I don't know how likely that will happen. Our plan since the first time we met was for her to be a SAHM and watch my babies as soon as I had them. She had her first a year ago, and my husband and I love that little boy like he's our own.

I have an 11 month old and she's 1 of only 3 babies in DH's residency class (of about 12 residents), two of the women are pregnant. All but 1 of the 12 spouses works. So, don't despair, I think you'll be in good company! I know exactly what you mean about this time during MS4 - it's really hard not to know where you're going or what the plan is when you arrive.

Will you look for a job when you move? Are you definitely moving or did he rank his home program high?
Married to a Urology Attending! (that is an understated exclamation point)
Mama to C (Jan 2012), D (Nov 2013), and R (April 2016). Consulting and homeschooling are my day jobs.

I'll mostly start applying as soon as we find out where he matches, although I've submitted some that have deadlines a little bit earlier and will withdraw if we don't match there. We haven't quite finalized his rank list, but I think the home program will be low enough that he won't match here - he isn't crazy about it. Depending on where we go, I do have the option to keep my current job and work remotely, but I'll probably at least look at opportunity everywhere to see what would be best.

Heh. As someone who ranked two locations where he did aways above the local program...and ended up in the local program, I just want to tell you to be prepared for ANYTHING. At least you won't be finding out at the main match, with everyone around!

Good luck finalizing! We did that on 1/1/2012 and it felt sort of festive - we had some champagne afterward!

I work remotely and though it's tough, it was nice to not have to change everything all at once - moving, starting residency, new baby two days before match were all on our plate from Jan-May 2012.
