  • Hello Again! Spouse of MSIII, Bus Home, & Residency prep

    Hi Everyone,

I posted on IMSN a few years ago when medical school was still just a twinkle in my husband, Chris', eye. As always seems to be the case with life things got busy and I dropped away from IMSN. Now that he's an MSIII I've decided to check in, get some insight and hopefully make some new friends as we prepare for residency.

I'm a 25 year old teacher in Tampa, Florida. We have two adorable dogs, Winston and Willow, and this week we got 2 chickens! Tilly and Clementine are just a couple weeks old and are an ameracauna and bantam pullet, respectively. I teach pottery and metalsmithing at a local arts studio and science at a privately owned nature preserve. I also write for a magazine and love all of my jobs.

An interesting thing about us is that after Chris finished his second year of med school he took a year off to get a masters in public health. During that year we bought a used school bus and converted it into our home. We travel in our bus during the few weeks a year he has off and mostly spend our time in state parks with our dogs where we can enjoy being out in quiet nature with each other. The rest of the time the bus is parked in a friend's backyard on an RV pad. Yes, we have all the essentials including AC/Heat, a fridge, running water etc. Is anyone else partaking or interested in a "tiny home" life style?

We have a few more months before he starts applying to residencies, he's narrowed his interests down to Family Med, Peds, and Psych and has compiled a list of over 30 residencies he's considering. He's been pretty amazing and wants me to look at the locations to see if they're places we could be happy in for several years. So I'm wondering what kind of preparing other spouses have done during the end of 3rd year and start of 4th? So far I have an excel document with the locations and some things I would really like to have, major airport, pottery studio, university nearby, some arts/leisure activities etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and getting to know everyone!
    Kelly

Welcome! The bus sounds awesome, and what great memories!

The main things we considered with my hubby's residency applications were: places we actually wanted to live and places I could get a job. I did some networking and interviewing myself at a lot of the places where he interviewed. We did end up a bit surprised by our match results, but it all worked out and we're happy here.

Wow that is so cool! I'd love to see pictures of your home!!!

We did the same thing with excel and it was helpful but actually going to the places he's most interested in will definitely give you a better idea. There were several places I thought I'd love and didn't (and vice versa)! At the end of the day, every place has its ups and downs and I know you'll find things you love wherever you end up!

      Welcome back!

Thank you! I have a little website/blog about the bus and a Facebook page if you'd like to see some pics www.justrightbus.com or www.facebook.com/justrightbus

I'm doing what I can now to see if I can go with him for some interviews next year and we're trying to plan our "fun trips" around places that he's considering to see if we can knock out a few before interview season too.

Can we be friends? You guys sound awesome!

Sounds like you were around before my time but so glad you are back! My husband and I both grew up in Florida (though it's a coincidence, we met after moving to NC). I lived in Tampa while doing a bachelor's in music, then moved to Tally for grad school (he graduated from UF). His aunt is a painter and has a pretty cool studio in s.Tampa, you might know her! We're in the Midwest now, he's PGY3 ophtho. I'm a freelance musician. I teach cello with five, yes five programs spanning from an outreach for elementary students to two private universities.

When we first moved in together he lived in my studio apartment for almost a year, is that tiny living? I almost think we could do that again. Maybe not... sounds like you'll have a lot of fun on the interview trail if you're able to go via bus

Welcome back! Looking forward to getting to know you!

            Welcome back!

Proximity to family, cost of living, and weather/landscape were the things we considered in addition to program quality.

Love it...that bus/home rocks!!! Would have loved to do something like that. As I get into my old age, my tolerance for stuff is less and less. We were supposed to downsize this last move and we ended up with an extra thousand sq ft. Ugh...love the location of my house and some feautures but could use less square footage to heat, cool an clean.

Your DH could also consider MedPeds...why do just one residency, when you can do two at.the.same.time? Haha. Seriously, DH started off as family med but went medpeds after MS3.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Mapplebum, I'm always looking for more friends! We both grew up in Tampa and went to UF *cough* go gators I think tiny is about perspective. For some it's too small, for others it's Just Right. For me, it's having only what we need so we can do more of what we want. Seems to be working out, though if we go someplace in the cold white north we will probably have to leave the bus behind, or build a better/warmer one.

What's your dh aunt's name? You can PM it to me if you want.

Did you study cello in Tampa? One of my very best friend's is a cellist who graduated from USF. She just move to LA to try and make it big as a singing cellist. I wanted to play Cello when I was very little but my mom said I couldn't play an instrument I fit inside of so I played violin till I was about 14. My brother is a professional violinist.

Welcome! We're MS-3 too, and DH will match into IM. We've chosen programs largely based on location and quality of program. We want to move back to our home state which happens to have some great IM programs that we'd be very satisfied with, and the states surrounding also have good programs that wouldn't require a huge move...outside of those considerations, we've ranked based on "cool" locations (Denver, Nashville, Dallas, NYC, Charleston, etc.) and "names" in the Northeast. Since IM is pretty middle of the road in terms of competitiveness, we don't foresee having to rank a huge number of programs and will probably rank within the Southeast, unless something further west blows him away during interview season. Hopefully we won't have to go far but you never know!

Your bus sounds so cool! What a neat idea and what a pleasurable way to live life

Love your ticker can you believe it's almost here?? What rotation is your DH currently on?
