I think it’s tough to answer because every CASA is a little different. In ours, volunteers generally only have one case at a time. A case is a single removal, but all kids involved in that family. At least once each month, you visit in-person with the child(ren), and you also make contact with the parent and foster parents. You also attend CPS conferences for the case and testify at all hearings. Basically, you work as an independent fact gatherer, and you present those facts to the judge in a report and during your testimony. It can be redundant with a good CPS worker, but as we all know, CPS never has enough people to keep eyes on the children as often as they would like.

I was a guardian ad litem for a couple years and my experience was similar to what ladymoreta shared. I had a sibling group of 4 in three different homes. Lots of fact finding, advocating for what child wants, sharing observations, talking to schools, doctor's offices, therapists, parents, foster parents, etc. I wouldn't recommend becoming a GAL or CASA unless you truly believe reunification is the best interest of the child. You need to really check your bias and not be easily influenced by information shared with you from any source.
