Wow, that's an eye-opening response! I suppose the location of the program may have some small effect on hour, but I also wondered why anesthesiology was considered to be more family friendly....I guess in comparison to a surgical residency it's much easier call-wise? What has his call schedule been like for the most part each month? ie how many months Q3, Q4, Q5..

Thanks for the warm welcome. My husband was an intern in surgery. His schedule the past few years, in anesthesia, has been worse. I will let you know what the past few days has been like. This past Wed night on call and came home Thursday morning. Went back Friday morning and came back late Saturday morning. Left this morning (Sunday) and won't be back until tomorrow probably late morning. Then back again on Tuesday morning until sometime on Wednesday. So much for anesthesia being 'family friendly' : )

Hi everyone. I am new here. I read about what some of you think anesthesia residency is like, and I had to immediately respond. : ) I don't really know about everywhere else, but at Boston Medical Center the anesthesia residency is pretty brutal. My husband can work 90+ hours a week. Also, being on-call always means being on-call "in hospital." My husband doesn't come home more nights than he does. When he does an ICU rotation, or an OB/GYN rotation, he only comes home every other night. When he does get home, he can't even function because he has just been on call "in hospital" for almost 30 hours. He then has to be back at the hospital in about 18 hours. When they do cardiac, and the operations are long, they can be in the operating room for 10-12 hours straight. It can be get brutal!



I am not complaining : ), I'm just telling you what anesthesia residency in Boston is like.



For those of you whose spouse is about to start an anesthesia residency, keep me posted on how it's going, and what it's like at the hospital they are at.



I think I read someone's husband was starting a residency in RI. I have to go back and see who it was, because I am not far from there.

WELCOME! Matt is going to UWash for Anesthesia. During the Match in 2001, Matt had applied and gotten an interview at Mass Gen, and at Brigham Women's, and after talking to other people decided not to go there for that reason- they over work their residents. That stinks that your hubby works that much. I am sure Matt will work quite a bit, but in comparison to his internal medicine internship here at University of Colorado (found out that they have a pretty rigorous IM program) it will be much better. Depending on the rotation Matt has worked up to 100-110 hours a week. Right now he is averaging about 80-90 on this rotation, which is good. (It's his last call month until Sept, YEAH!!!!) Matt has ER the month of June, and at UW, Matt was told the residents don't pull call for the first 2 months of their CA-1 (PGY-2).

Mass General and Brigham and Women's are great hospitals. My husband was thinking about doing a fellowship at one of those hospitals, but he is going to stay With Boston Medical Center for his fellowship. Michael is finishing up his third year. He is also going to be Chief Resident this year.

We are off in the moring for Disneyworld. My husband has to attend the ASA Conference there, because they are having the Chief Resident Training Program as part of the Conference.
