    Hello everyone

Thanks to whomever had the idea to set up this forum. I know everything is to be found on the World Wide Web so instead of continuing my late-evening medical-partner depression bout I googled 'medical spouse' and there you all are!! I wish I had more contacts with the spouses of my partner's colleagues, but it's just not happening right now. I am happy to meet you guys, if virtually.

My partner is in 3rd year of med school and I am a PhD student. He is currently into his General Surgery rotation (which explains the late-evening medical-partner depression bout abovementionned). We are in Canada. We have been together for just over a year (living together for about 9 months now) but I can't say I didn't know what to expect. I had many friends who were medical students and residents before. It's just that the surgery rotation is hitting at full speed right now, and my naturally anxious partner is driving the two of us outright crazy.

I also happen to be a sociologist so thankfully I can rationalize a lot of that's happening, but it doesn't stop it from being hell.

So thanks for setting this up, and I look forward to mingling with you guys in the other threads!!

Welcome. May you find some solace! This place is a life saver. I'm also currently going through the "Your stress is stressing me out." thing right now. I'm exhausted with it. But don't worry. We are all here to listen!!

Nice to have you! We've got a lot of Ph.D. types around here. You'd think we'd be smart enough to not marry a doctor, huh?

I look forward to getting to know you.

WELCOME!!! I, too was a PhD student while my spouse was in med school. However, I think that having my own accademic dramas/stressors/activities is what helped me not feel so alone while he was gone for 30+ hrs. at a time. He has said that it also reduced his anxiety/sometimes guilt knowing that I "was doing my own thing" while he was away. Then again, that was with no kiddos. Kids add many more "variables" But I digress.....WELCOME, WELCOME. This site has been instrumental in keeping my sanity.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

                Welcome!

Cool, another Canadian. The former British colonies are certainly becoming well represented w/ Australia, Ireland (The Republic of...), India and Canada. (and of course, the US.)

                We're glad to have you.

                  Hello again new friends!

I knew of course I was not alone in my boat, but it's good to see it confirmed!!!

It's good to read that I'm not the only fool doing a PhD either. It is indeed good to have a "thing" of my own - I can't imagine not having that, though, I've always been a very busy woman with some sort of research or policy work - but it would be great sometimes to be able to explode about my own drama and not to get two minutes of listening and then... "I gotta hit the books." I know he genuinely supports me though, more than any man or, for that matter, person I've ever been close to. I've been in situations where my boyfriend was not half as busy as my partner now is, and much less caring. So when I think about that it helps.

However right now I'm working on my comps and... well, I'm bored. I very much look forward to being in the field doing interviews and observations again, I will feel better about myself then. Reading theory all day is just numbing.

Momof4: My PhD is in a faculty of education, but I'm actually doing sociology of science. I am doing a PhD... on the training of PhD students!! In the past I have had some interest in medical training, that's probably why I feel all the dumber sometimes for putting myself through that perfectly well knowing what would happen to me!!! Thankfully, my partner is very sweet and caring, and I know what he's like when he doesn't have exam stress on his shoulders.

Anyways! Thanks for your warm welcome! I look forward to joining more discussions! I have asked for access to the 'private' forums, I hope to see you there!!
