Honestly, I think thread locking is just a way to say "Take it outside folks!" before it gets out of hand. I can see how it would be frustrating if you had something really good to say.....but I can never tell which way those things are going to go. Most of the time, these heated discussions just calm down, but when someone is obviously baiting others - and they are responding - it isn't easy to call.
Debate forum moves are a good idea. An administrator's call to calm things down might work as well -- but since most of the administrators participate in the discussions as members first, that can also be awkward.
