Re: Dumbledore is gay
This is great. An intelligent discussion without any emotional baggage attached.
Some have hailed her revelation as a bold step for the gay rights movement and made Dumbledore a poster child for acceptance. However, I am of the opinion that when a person of the majority writes about a minority, their own perceptions and prejudices tend to leak on the page. If Rowling wrote that Kingsley Shacklebottom (a black character) loved to play basketball, and eat chicken, I would think that she herself is confirming stereotypes. This is a dynamic very much like the noble savage characters such as Sambo. Putting the Skeeter thing aside, there is a stereotype that gay love is fierce and destructive, just like Dumbledore had for Grenwald. Why is it that for all the other good characters except Dumbledore, that their love is redeeming and inspiring, but his love allowed for thousands of people to be killed ? Was his sexuality a flaw or an asset ? Rowling seems to be writing that it is was not an asset. Furthermore I have read in some reports that she encourages people to go back and find clues. Over all I think sexuality played a role in everyones decisions, so Dumbledore's outing to me is a major thing.
