Re: Not all residents are smart...

Patient confidentiality is huge at most teaching hospitals I think, residents have been suspended or worse for lots of things regarding it - there are to many famous patients that want the best treatment for it to not be an issue.

Not that this guy is famous but I think you get my point.

Famous or not, people deserve to have their confidentiality respected. Even if he showed anyone who asked, that doesn't make this ok. FWIW, when I read that, I thought it was funny and if someone said they saw that on a patient, I would laugh. But taking a photo and showing it around is not cool.

I feel for his wife too.

They HAVE to fire him now regardless of what anyone thinks.

Is a Cheif residency optional in General surgery? Maybe he's already completed enough years to be done? That might be his only saving grace for his career.

In our program, the clinical 5 year was the "chief" year and it wasn't optional. That may vary from program to program though.

Its the same way in DH's nsurg program. I'll have to ask DH if he knows how the GS program here works, I'm assuming its the same in AZ.

ETA: Checked with DH - not an optional/extra thing.

Re: Not all residents are smart...

While junior-level residents operate every other day, training in years PGY-1 and PGY-2 is weighted to pre-operative and post-operative patient care. In PGY-2, you also will serve as a senior resident in the surgical intensive care unit. During PGY-3 and PGY-4, your training will emphasize surgical technique and skill refinement. As a chief resident in PGY-5, you will lead your own surgical team and assume full responsibility for patient and resident team management.
According to Mayo's website. I think he should be allowed to finish out the six months. He should be suspended, on probation, have to make public apologies and other similar retributions. Further, the title of "chief" should be stripped just to placate people. Six months. He is married, then? Oh God. That poor woman. May she be stronger than I am.

I think that all sounds logical Heidi, I'm just not sure Mayo is always logical. Of course there was a case here last year or the year before where like 16 people both residents and not accessed someone's records, now I can't remember exactly who it was but I'm pretty sure it was one of the past presidents that come here and they weren't kicked out - just suspended.

I'm sorry, but this is the kind of conduct that any hospital staff member- resident, nurse, or tech- should be fired for. I don't care how much training the person has under his or her belt, this kind of conduct warrants being fired.

Of all people, a resident doctor knows better. What an idiot.

You all would not believe the tattoos and various other designs and piercings my husband has seen on different female nether regions throughout his career, including residency. NO WAY would he ever take a picture! Come on, isn't that a no-brainer? It is not like this guy was an MS 1 or something.

I definitely think he should be fired. If he is that stupid and impulsive, there is no way he should be around unconscious people brandishing a scalpel.
