  • Miley Cyrus

I'm really curious about what the moms of tweens think.

I think it's an inappropriate-for-her-age shot - but I think it's also a very "Vanity Fair" and Annie Leibowitz shot. What did the Cyrus people think they were going for? Frankly the pic of Miley laying across her dad's lap looking all sensual looks worse to me. It was digital, parents and handlers saw the images at the shoot - all of this "embarrassment" and "anger" is a day late, IMO.

I also think the snaps that Miley posted on her myspace page are more indicitave of trouble. She flashes her bra, and is laying across her boyfriend's lap. And SHE posted those. At least the Leibowitz pics are nicely composed!

ETA: I just went and read the Vanity Fair article online. In the first paragraph she says her favorite show is Sex & the City. If her parents let her watch that -- even the TBS version -- Annie Leibowitz and her camera are the LEAST of their issues.

Another case of parents exploiting their children. I think her Dad is trying to revive his career through her. I hope it won't be a repeat of the Spers and the Lohans.

My DD hasn't gotten in to the whole Disney channel thing. No Hannah here. Yeah!

        Re: Miley Cyrus

To be quite honest I think the Miley Cyrus poses are indicative of the hypocritical society we live in. On one had we are raiding children and taking them from their homes for getting married to old men, but then on the other hand aren't equally outraged by sexually posing children of the same age for the mass media - including old perverted men. While they aren't totally the same crime, it's getting pretty darn close, IMO - Annie the photographer or not.

          Re: Miley Cyrus

The only photo of her I've seen recently is the one showing her bare back with the blanket over her chest. I don't think that is appropriate for a 15 year old girl and I don't want my daughters to look at that and think it's something to aspire to. I will still let them watch Hannah Montana because I don't think my kids will ever see those photos and the show is clean. I stopped letting them watch Zoey 101 (b/c Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant and it was all over the news and my kids did see that) and The Suite Life (because I think the kids are so disrespectful to adults). While we're on this topic...what is it with the Naked Brothers Band? Why are they naked? Really, just curious. I think that's ridiculous.

                Re: Miley Cyrus

Consider Miley's target audience is pre-tween, really. In 6th grade here, Miley is "totally out"... She may still have pull over the 3rd grade set, but the middle schoolers roll their eyes...

The picture of her with the satin sheets was disgusting. Not artsy, as Miley said, but disgusting. To make it worse, she looked like she was more like 13-- can you say pedophiles??? (not spell, obviously...)

And the one with her dad? Yuck. Double yuck.

About 2 years ago, I was impressed with the Cyrus clan (right when Hannah Montana took off) thru an article. It emphasized their family unity, going to church together, Miley getting an allowance , and now???

I'm sad to say I predicted it... I wish the pattern of pimping out child stars was more avoidable. Are there any success stories?

                  Re: Miley Cyrus

I kind of admire Annie Leibowitz. (Can't spell it though!!!). She points out interesting characteristics in all the celebs she photographs. I think you could make a case that the photograph calls out the "pimping out" of our preteen stars by society a la Britney and now Miley. She is a product, not a little girl. Sad commentary made very clear in the photographs (with Dad as well.)

I think we should also remember that most of those fashion models we see in magazines are also between 15-25. We like that youthful look. It is something to think about.

Excellent point Angie. A lot of runway models get their start when they're 14 or 15. I remember one of the models (the one w/the most sexual behavior BY FAR) on Season 1 of Project Runway was only 15.

make sure to look at pics 1 and 2 - posted by Bravo on their site during the season. the other two pics are something she wore on the show, and the arguement could be made that she had to wear what the designers gave her. the first link are pics from her portolio.

                      Yowza. Picture 2?

I think I'd have a problem with that if it was my 15 year old. I think it is a little creepy that we condition our culture to think this is an appropriate object of desire. Then, in predictable Puritanical fashion, we slam down anyone that says a 15 year old looks sexy. Strange world.
