ITA with Sally about government showing that it doesn't spend $$ wisely. With respect to who one should vote for, however (which is where this thread started), I can't say that McCain would be a better choice! He'd continue with the Iraq war - indefnintely - and honestly probably start another one!

I agree with whoever said (you?) that Obama's proposal probably wouldn't get through as he has presented.

Okay, so here is my highly thought out answer.

I hate paying taxes. I mean who really likes it, anyway? I feel like I deserve all my money, and I don't want to have to pay for my idiot brother because we have worked hard for our money, and he is a lazy sack of crap.

I hate that my tax money goes to paying for bombs that kill people who don't deserve to die.

I think that paying taxes, though, is a necessary thing, and I like driving on roads and sending my kids to school.

But, in voting for someone who will give the most of my money back to me, the money that I do shell out will be more likely to pay for military actions that I cannot get behind. Furthermore, they might just nominate a couple of Supremes who think it is fine and dandy to take away my civil liberties. I think we ought to keep abortion legal, and I think stem cell research is important and that we've had 8 years of missing the boat on that river ride.

So, if I vote to have the money I do shell out go to things that I don't mind paying for as much like education (against vouchers), roads, parks, and warm and fuzzy things. If I want to preserve civil liberties, I have to pay more in taxes.

That sucks!

I can't in good faith vote for a man who wants to continue to support military action. I can't. However, what $$ amount is this really going to mean to my bottom line. Really. Is it a couple hundred? A couple thousand? Tens of thousands?

My vote for Obama is likely a vote against McCain more than anything else.

I don't "get" most of how the economy works or even how taxes translate into spending. But wealthier people already pay more money in taxes. I'm not on board with the morality that mandates redistributing wealth by having those who earn more pay a greater percentage of what they earn.

I'd rather see subsidies cut, loopholes closed. Less spending, thanks.

And really, 250K for DINK sounds still middle class, especially in a big city. I think this would further hurt and shrink the middle class in America. I could probably accept 1Mil or more for personal income.

I think Obama does surround himself with bright, capable people. I just don't agree with what is being suggested.

eta: I think I need to add that a reason this is a huge issue for me in voting is that I think people should be able to choose the social programs they contribute to. Whether the money goes toward war or welfare, I'd rather be the one directly contributing than to let the govt pool the taxes and decide for me. Not that I think everyone is so altruistic and would contribute to society if they keep more earnings. People suck, but I think politicians suck more than most people.

I just read the following (see link). And, it is a very good essay on its own - replete with vivid imagery. It touches on my own problems with Obama - that he has been a blank page onto which others have imagined their own personal hopes/dreams. It explains his "rock star" status and why the followers of Obama I know in real life tend to be so emotional (for lack of a better word) over his candidacy:

I don't know if this necessarily belongs in the Debate section, but because it pertains to politics I'll post it here.

I'm genuinely curious about those of you who support Obama, specifically those of you who support him and are out of the training phase. Obama's proposed tax plan calls for increasing the tax rate (to 55%, I believe?) on those making $250k/year and more. This is almost a deal-breaker for DH to vote for Obama. He feels like he's worked pretty damned hard for the big attending paycheck, and he's pissed off that by the time he finally finishes training and gets the big paycheck ... Obama is calling for over half of it to be eaten up by taxes.

Thoughts?

DH and I have been talking about this A LOT.

The bottom line -- DH benefitted a GREAT deal from programs as a child for low income families and single parent households. He received several Pell Grants and financial aide -- some state some federal. I checked into this with his mom to verify....they were all programs the Dems created and some Reps supported.

His mom was constantly stressed about money -- these programs allowed her to exhale once in a while and live in a safe environment where there were good public schools.

....sooooooooo in our minds, voting Obama is much more in line with what we believe socially. With regard to money, the Dems basically helped him become a doc and go to a great college for undergrad he never could have afforded otherwise.

To us, it's a no brainer.
