If they give me a stimulus check, i will once again use against outstanding debt. I'm not buying anything.

Maybe I would use it to offset airline tickets home but definitely no 'stuff'.

What a laugh - the government takes enormous amounts of Americans' money and will give them the "gift" of maybe a thousand dollars of their own money back to them.

It's missing the point of the economic crisis to begin with.

I think it's crazy. And once again, if they're hoping that Americans go out and spend it, they're just encouraging more of the rampant consumerism that got us all into this mess.

Ridiculous...and those of us out of training can pay for it, but not see a penny of it.

I like free money just as much as the next person, but this is just silly... If they're going to keep spending like it's Monopoly money, I'd rather see them put it into schools or roads or something. Most people will use it to pay debt or save, while the ones who aren't good with money are likely to use it to get more into debt. (Now I can afford that SUV - I hear the prices have dropped!)

Re: New Tax Rebate On The Table

I actually heard a discussion yesterday about how to *make* the taxpayers use the money instead of saving it. I suppose they want to give the "credit" to the people so they can put it in to businesses to keep sales up, etc. Of course, if you let people keep the money via lower taxation or give it to them via a rebate they get to choose not to spend....and this inflated GDP we have based on our past behavior will come down....companies will have to contract their employment levels (more unemployment) ...so....recession will have to be uttered at some point. Gawd - how people hate that word.

DH and I were joking that they could send you $250 cash....or $300 in a gift card to the retailer of your choice! I like the idea of building infrastructure via releasing money to the states. The states could use the money to pay for programs to rebuild bridges, road, add high speed lines, etc. Cash goes in to the economy. I suppose that won't help the retailers this holiday season though. I think the world can do without Linen's and Things....(bankrupted a few months back)..... but I suppose I'd feel different if I worked for them.

I'd love to know where you get that information; the tax cut information on Obama's web site talks about a tax credit, NOT a rebate check.

Re: New Tax Rebate On The Table

Well, I think given the complete and utter mess that our friends in DC have left us, neither candidate is going to be able to do anything.

I don't think either candidate's tax plans will do jack shit to pay for any of the bajillions of dollars that we would need to get us back into solvency. (although balanced budgets on the Federal level are always hocus-pocus numbers anyway- even my boy Bill kinda sorta exaggerated their surplus amounts)

I prefer Obama's plan because I'll personally feel the bigger benefit.

As for the stimulus? It's so beyond a bad idea that it's comical.

Pollyana, we don't have a conservative option in this election. We have a liberal (McCain) and a socialist (Obama). Those are our viable choices. Yippee.

I'm still trying to decide my vote.... And, it's not easy.... :soapbox:

Oh yes, Obama is quite the socialist. It's him, Hugo Chavez and Castro marching behind the red banner, right? Sorry, but coming from a country that has actually experienced real socialism, it is beyond me how anyone could regard his policies as socialist.
