I'm still scratching my head that any bakery owner would turn away a paying customer.

This! Business is business and in this economy why do anything that could potentially shut down your company?

Folks got very cranky when my parents built a house for a gay couple in the '80s. Showed up at our door demanding them to stop the job. I think my mom told them something along the lines of, "go to hell, we are not concerned about what goes on in their bedroom, only that they can pay their bills" Then she proceeded to ask them about their sex life because maybe they are doing things the other neighbors would approve of, lol.

Ugh. DH is required by law to see a patient who requires an ASL interpreter because of the ADA. Not only can we not refuse to see the patient, but we have to pay for and provide the interpreter even though we will lose money.

Thomas has to pay for Somali interpreters all the time. Same thing.

To be fair, your comments sound pretty personal and did imply that the ADA law was the only reason V's spouse treats ADA patients. I read her comments very differently. We love a good debate, but keep it friendly. Medicine is a small small world.

That's a good reminder, SJ. Medicine is surprisingly small world, even as vast as this country is from one side to another.

And yes, many of us probably took Vanquisher's comments differently because we know her very well. She is an exceptionally empathetic and generous med spouse. The ADA isn't the *only* reason her DH sees this patient. Her dude is an incredibly talented and caring doc who frequently puts his patients' needs above his or his family's needs. He's a generous physician and his patients are exceedingly fortunate to have a doc who is so invested in their cases.

Our debates area can get dicey sometimes, but is typically pretty respectful and smart. Dickish comments about other (non-members) are usually cool beans, but be careful making them to each other here. We will call each other out on that in a heartbeat. Lovingly, of course.

The truth is, it could end up costing us hundreds of dollars, or even more, out of our pockets to see this one patient. That takes away resources from all our other patients, limits our giving in other ways, and is a financial burden on a private practice. It makes it harder to pay our employees what they deserve and need to live on. We already give away a ton of free care including surgeries. We pay for medical equipment that is given away. I keep the lights on in a clinic that is squeezed from all sides.

Just because my husband is a doctor does not mean that he's greedy. I am pissed at this implication, and you have no right to come here to this board and personally attack his or my character. He accepts patients without knowing if or how we will get paid. He never asks about insurance.

Most people here understand that doctors are under constant scrutiny and have thought of to be greedy, rich, uncaring, asses who are in bed with insurance and pharmaceutical companies in a big "rip off the little guy" conspiracy. This could not be further from the truth.

The truth is that private practice docs are an endangered species. They are asked to give more and work harder. They are constantly battling with insurance companies and other large companies to get their patients the care they need. They eat costs. Their reimbursements often don't cover costs, and they are falling.

If you knew me at all, you would never have made such a snarky, snide remark. You'd know that I was a generous, kind, bleeding-heart liberal who happens to have a son who is profoundly deaf in one ear and wears hearing aids.


So, I hope I took what you said the wrong way, but I don't think I did. Don't attack me. Don't attack my family. You'll lose.

I think this is getting blown WAY out of proportion. It's a misunderstanding - and there's probably more misunderstanding going on now with all the dog-piling on the new guy.

If there's more to this, it needs to be publicly posted because from my perspective, we look very unwelcoming in our public space.

Although Kim seems (to the public eye), like she is letting Kanye run the show. She asked his permission to post a picture of her butt in a bathing suit/thing thing. It's very bizarre to say the least
