That's only true about the visa if they're nationals FROM western Africa. If they hold an European passport, there is no visa control.

True. We can't control it all .... but we can limit it.

      • My township just announced training for its first responders and school nurses on Ebola. There is no one here with Ebola or exposure to it. What a waste of resources. I am getting weary of the panic about this and enterovirus (which is slowing down). Please can we go back to just worrying about the flu??

        • I actually think they should be trained. Maybe ebola isn't a real threat, but I do think bioterrorism in general is a real threat, and first responders should be prepared. And I think this has shown that on a whole, we have a lot to do.

I do think they should have chosen a politician with medical knowledge, but I think the main thing we needed for the "czar" was someone with knowledge of how government works. We already have the CDC, NIH etc with plenty of MDs and epidemiologists. We really just needed someone to coordinate efforts.

It would have helped if they had a medical, science, or public health background. There were people better suited for the job for sure.

            • Yeah, at this point we need a confident voice and a strong organizer. I think the scientific style is not working in this spectrum. I was actually worried they'd pick a doc and the doc would have the whole "little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing" problem. We all know how overconfident docs can be and frankly, a pediatrician knows little about heart surgery and vice versa.

We shouldn't need a Czar if we had a competent CDC. Again, it's just all smoke and mirrors and I really don't think they know what they're doing.

I would close the borders to everyone. Hell, I wasn't even supportive of bringing the aid workers back. Sometimes drastic measures are necessary, especially when the folks in charge are trying to play catch up.

                • I think we do need a hierarchy though. It was clear from the hearings that the CDC does not control the borders or research. They need someone to coordinate all the bureaucrats so we don't end up with all the agencies pointing at each other as the responsible party.

I'm sorry, we a freaking out about a lab worker who handled Ebola specimens in a controlled environment being on a cruise ship? The same lab worker that handles specimens from all sorts of places and with all sorts of diseases as part of her job every damn day? I mean, obviously, this means she should be under quarantine for the duration of her career, right?

                    This is getting ridiculous.

                      • OMG - the more details that come out about this lab worker, the more crazy it sounds. I think the person is on like day 19 after handling any specimens and they're turning the ship around? Really???? I like the CDC guy who is on the ground in Cleveland. He actually called out the schools and businesses that have closed, specifically saying "they have done more harm than good." Amen.

As for the choice of Czar? Bad. And, I think both Republicans and Democrats are going to think he's a bad choice. The response just makes no sense.

                        • Oh, this made me laugh though. I was with my SIL today (UT Grad) and she said the president of UT posted a statement on Facebook because a UT student was on the same flight as the nurse coming from Cleveland (or maybe just the same plane as a different time--I'm not sure. Either way it was remote)

First comment under the article: "You are way more likely to get herpes on the UT campus than Ebola"

                            • I can't be too specific because this is a public forum, but we socially know one of the big players in the "Ebola-Gate" sideshow that has gone on this week. I have very strong views on how people are being treated, and the off-the-charts level of ignorance by the Talking Heads. I am a complete news junkie, but I became so angry I just turned off the tube several times. I think it is appalling that they are turning this into something political. It is a disease, not a tool for the politicians. On either side. I have tried to be supportive of the family, who are being dragged through hell.
