I'm leaning towards yes.

At a very minimum I think parents shouldn't be able to opt out for personal reasons when they enroll their kids in school. If they don't want to vaccinate then homeschool.

As a school (public health) nurse...I think yes. School is a perfect storm for contagions. With technology there are home, online, public school curriculum programs. You still interact with the public teachers online, and get class credit. Not every stat offered this, but that's a place to start. It does require a parent to stay home with the kids, but it's still ultimately a choice.

I think yes, too. Previously, we had enough herd immunity to keep people relatively safe from non-vaccinators, but that threshold isn't there anymore in some locations.

I bristle at the idea of mandatory vaccinations. Do I think everyone should have them? Absolutely!! But once you start going down that road of giving up your rights you will never get them back. Another issue that I have not seen covered is the huge influx of illegal immigrants and their lack of immunizations. It really is another problem that needs to be confronted.

I don't think they are mandatory. An institution has a right to impose the requirement, especially if their are comparable public options at home. The only grief I can see is that you have to have a parent at home full time.

I agree that the bare minimum should be a removal of all "personal exemptions" for not vaccinating and still sending kids to public school, and probably religious ones, too; there are very few if any legit religions that actually have a stance against vaccines. Idiots who don't want to vaccinate their kids can go back to being a small enough percentage of the population that herd immunity can continue to work as it did for decades. I actually had a guy argue with me on facebook that "there is no risk of death from measles", while also implying he'd done a lot of research. I still can't get over that. So fucking self-centered.

I'm not sure which immigrants you mean, but most of the ones coming from countries south of the US are from countries with higher vaccination rates than many parts of the U.S.

I don't know, but I believe if you choose to not vaccinate then you choose to stay home and homeschool.

I think Germany has a measles outbreak largely due to immigrants, but that hasn't been the case in the U.S. from what I've read.

I agree that public institutions should be able to require vaccination to attend. It should limit it to publicly communicable diseases though. I wouldn't think schools should be requiring Gardisil just yet since HPV is sexually transmitted and not airborne/bloodborne.

This is my take on it.

I know you guys are talking about illegal immigrants but when I went through the immigration process I had to be vaccinated or provide records for everything. Kind of funny that it's required of immigrants but not of citizens.

As somebody who is terrified of needles and has had mutliple adverse reactions to vaccinations as a child...absolutely they should be mandatory. All the complications I had are significantly better than what could have been. Homeschooling unvaccinated children won't help. It's not like they will have zero contact with the public for the rest of their lives.

I don't understand why people choose not to vaccinate. I just don't get it.

Given, this is coming from childless freak who got inappropriately drunk at happy hour and decided now would be the appropriate time to post, but seriously, I think drunk me is more intelligent than an anti-vaxxer.

Yes, vaccines should be mandatory to attend public school unless you have a sincere medical exemption.

I have a wicked vasovagal response with syncope when I get injections. Yup, still think vaccinations should be mandatory.

We make liability insurance on cars mandatory. I don't see why vaccinations are less important.
