Should Jenner have won the Ashe award?

I don't think the other candidates were doing anything selfless either. Lauren Hill had a brain tumor and she played college basketball because she wanted to play basketball. She wasn't doing it for anybody else.

She's a big deal around here. Spent a great deal of her limited time at children's with other kids who had terminal illness. I believe she's a hero in every sense of the word.

That said, I believe what Jenner did was indeed courageous, but not heroic. I find the timing of the announcement suspect, but that really isn't for me to decide, I don't think the espys could ever top Stuart Scott.

. If just she is able to help one teenager live a more authentic life, or to say SHE did it, and SHE was Bruce Freaking Jenner, than I can do this too and not kill myself.

True, but that can also be said for many others...Many strive to treat others in a way that makes them feel valued and as such given hope to some that are struggling with a myriad of issues. I think the issue with Jenner is that not all identify this person as the one on the cereal box. There is a generation that only knows her as the guy on a crazy reality show. I am curious to learn what the transgendered community thinks...granted, they may not speak for all. For example, I learned that there are transgendered individuals that do not view Jenner as heroic or courageous. For this, I do thank Jenner for being the catalyst in creating a situtaion where people are talking.

This year Emma Willard School established a transgender task force at our single-gender school this to develop new policies related to transgender students and issues. It's been an interesting conversation to say the least. I'm linking an article shared by the task force regarding the spectrum of reproductive development, sex organs and hormones found in individuals based on small genetic variations. It's fascinating.

I have several students involved in sexuality/gender identity issues that I'm quite fond of. They are some of my favorite, most interesting students although I have no favorite students on record. Here is where I struggle with transgender surgeries and identities. If we know that sex exists on a greater continuum than once known, then why would you change yourself to fit into a binary sex system you're saying is too simplistic in the same breadth? I think [MENTION=1247]GrayMatterWife[/MENTION] has a very thoughtful point. How much of Caitlyn's feminine identity is based on superfical appearances and cultural norms? THe whole topic has made me really thing about how much of our gender identities are outwardly superficial and culturally dependent. Maybe the transgender conversation will push us past cultural genders altogether, and into the deeper self which *truly* is transgender? It a mind-bender for me.

There are plenty of courageous atheletes that transcend sports and they had to pick one. Is Jenner courageous and did she transcend sports? I'd go with yes.

It's not like they picked Aaron Hernandez ffs.

I'm sure ESPN is probably loving all the publicity for this year's ESPYs. I mean does anybody watch those? Do they actually mean anything? The recipient of this award doesn't even have to be an athlete. It's just a way for ESPN to feel good about itself. If they would have gotten a Rangers/Blackhawks Stanley Cup Finals, maybe they would have picked somebody else? (Only slightly kidding). I do wonder if they would have picked Jenner if she didn't look like she did?

ESPN is all the damn time in our house and that's the couple hours each year when the dude goes, "yeah maybe I'll work in silence".

ETA: I just wish we lived in a world where this wasn't even controversial and that we could go back to ignoring the ESPYs like we do every year. I wish the only thing that was controversial about Jenner is the fact that she associated with the kardashians.
