It has happened already with numerous retailers. I'm trying to think of all the ones I know of such as Target, Home Depot, Kmart, Michaels, Neiman Marcus, Bebe, ect. Usually you get a notification from them that your information has been compromised. Then they reissue credit cards or whatever. Most of the hacking for retailers is to get credit card information to sell on the deep web where for a membership fee people can have access to multiple cards and reprint them for personal use. However, the hackers have all the personal information such as phone numbers and items transaction information as well, but it doesn't appear the hackers are interested in dumping data of what people are buying.
Companies don't always disclose everything that was obtained in the breach but as we're finding out with the Ashley Madison case the hackers got the inner workings of the network and correspondence between members in the company. It was a pretty deep glut of stuff.
Our Kmart was hacked recently and we got a notification from our bank that our cards were compromised and they were automatically reissuing us new cards.
Remember when Target was hacked during the holidays? I think we even started a thread on here about it. People were wondering if they needed to call and cancel their cards with them. http://www.medicalspouse.com/forums/...=target+hacked
