I think we’ll know it’s truly widespread when the ICUs start to fill up. Genetic analysis of the strains in WA seem to indicate it has been spreading in the community for 6-9 weeks already. My friends in WA (south of Seattle) cannot get tested despite having been in Kirkland recently and having symptoms. They’ve called public health, hospitals, and their drs everyday and testing is simply refused because they weren’t in Wuhan.

That is outrageous. I can't believe we aren't able to routinely test people yet.

I'm not feeling like such a worry wart for stocking up on stuff a couple weeks ago after I heard the CDC on NPR saying to consider preparations. Our Walmart was out of toilet paper, sanitizer, and disinfectants.

We've had two positive tests, one in my county and one in another I've had to be in recently. 🤷

Got fitted for an N95 mask at work last week and our clinic has developed protocol for pts that call in with concerns or present with symptoms and risk factors.*

*I'm over the risk factors. Just fucking test people at this point so they can make efforts to be away from high risk populations if possible.

What I understand from DH is that the guidance only changed in the last 24 hours or so.

Also, can I say that I am OVER cute selfies from groups of people posing cheek-to-cheek? SOCIAL DISTANCING, PEOPLE.

We are moderately concerned! Our practice is pulmonary / internal medicine. So many of our patients already have lung issues.

Thomas has been getting panicked calls in the middle of the night and during the day from the ER because people are so worried. He is holding 3 town hall meetings across mn on Tuesday to try to educate the public and bring calm.

New evidence showing that incubation could be as long as 27 days. Median still around 3-5 days, but that’s not great news for how the WHO is recommending containing it.

Everyone should be practicing social distancing at this point.

We have travel plans in May to see my Dad. Unclear whether to cancel them or not.

                  Coronavirus

A child in our county has been diagnosed. All the schools in the child’s school system were closed today, and the individual school that the child attends is closed for two weeks (which takes them up to Spring Break, which is two weeks long). The school system based their decisions on recommendations from the state. A lot of parents are scrambling for child care right now!

ETA that a second child has now been diagnosed. All of the schools in that district are now closed for the next two weeks, and will be closed an additional two weeks beyond that because of Spring Break, affecting approximately ten thousand students. 😳😳😳

OMG. I am cycling rapidly between not worrying about it and feeling COMPLETE AND TOTAL PANIC. Every time I check this thread, I become hysterical.

Sorry! I’m still extremely alarmed. But there is hope to cling to if you need a bit of a life-raft: We’ve got potential treatments (not sure where in the pipeline) and a vaccine entering trials next month. It doesn’t seem to be hitting children as hard. Protect your family as best you can, stock up in case you need to quarantine. Hammer in hand-washing with your kids.

I’m seeing the drug development timeline up close. Vaccine is still a year out.

The worrisome thing is that it doesn’t appear to slow down in warm weather (see: Singapore). The seasonal flu doesn’t survive well in heat (thus the seasonality) but apparently COVID-19 does fine in high temps.

Sorry MrsK, don’t mean to freak you out more!

What concerns me most, and this has already been discussed here but I'll reiterate, is how testing continues to be limited. Both S. Korea and Italy were so much more aggressive with testing early on and NOW THE ENTIRE COUNTRY OF ITALY IS QUARANTINED! That's insane!! Is our healthcare system such a hot mess they can't get their shit together or are there people at top trying to pump the economy for all it's worth before shit hits the fan? That's what worries me. By not implementing mass testing 2 weeks ago, and continuing to fail to do so, we are walking directly into a situation where hospitals will be completely overwhelmed. That's what is the most dangerous for everyone, no matter your age. Right? When hospitals are overwhelmed, likely understaffed, and people who would normally recover can't because they aren't receiving care. I expect whatever happens, this thing will look much different in 4-6 weeks.
