anyone ever been there? sometimes i go and check things out...then get totally annoyed with the way they talk about doctors. i think some of the things they do and stand for are great...it takes all kinds to make the world go round. but man oh man, some of the stuff gets brutal in the discussions!

one thing i read today that had me :: a discussion about becoming more "crunchy". one person suggested using washable cloths for your own bathroom habits. :! kids yes, me and dh...hell to the NO!

anyhow, i hope i dont offend. alison, you go to that site dont you? what do you think about the negative doctor talk?

I mostly stick to my due date club and read the diapering boards, but I have been known to stick up for docs and medical procedures in some of the pregnancy and birth forums. MDC is...a world of its own.

Yeah, I think reusable TP is beyond my comfort level. Grown-up poo is just not the same as baby poo! I do like washable menstrual pads though, they're so soft compared to paper ones.

i have seen some pretty cute pads and diapers. are you going to do cloth diapers? have you made your own? they sure have come a long way since i was a baby...even since my little brother used them....uh! the fear of sticking the kid with a safety pin!!

Yep, I'm pretty well stocked up for the babe (I hope!) I'm not ambitious enough to sew my own diapers yet, but I did knit some wool diaper covers.

It can be upsetting when the doc bashing starts. Overall, I like the site though. Like Alison, I do find myself on the side of defending often. Especially when they talk about how closed minded *all* OB's are. Um, my OB husband caught his own baby on our bedroom floor, thankyouverymuch.

Basically I just try to ignore the doctor bashing, because it really is the only large online parenting community that is supportive of attachment parenting. And when you are living in a small town in the midwest, you just don't get support for non-CIO and gentle discipline in real life! There are some VERY extreme personalities, and lots of catiness though- so ironic really.

Anyhoo, I cloth diaper about half the time. I am always too far behind on laundry to do it full time. Maybe when DH is around a little more and can pitch in. And yeah- cloth TP ... I don't think so! :!

I go there all the time. I buy stuff on their trading post alot- you have to have 50 posts before you can see the for sale board. I cloth diaper both girls- it works well for me and is not that hard but is somewhat of a commitment, but anyways that is where I buy a lot of the dipes. Alison, let me know how it goes for you and if I can help.

People are so over-opinionated on there that it drives me nuts. They talk all the time about 'mainstream mothers' and how vastly different they are. Then they talk about how they watch Grey's Anatomy and driving a minivan and I am like yeah whatever if you are so crunchy why do you have digital cable? I think I mentioned this before, but I was reading about vaccinations on there and one woman swore there was documented proof that 95% of OBs refuse to get the MMR bc it is known to be toxic. I did not want to volunteer what my DH does, but I did post that I really doubted that was possible since you cant get hospital privileges without going thru employee health and well, I was ripped to shreds by numerous people over it.

I have a completely unrealistic dream of living off the grid- producing our own solar energy, our own food, that kind of stuff. I am not really serious about it but I do think it would be neat. MDC has a forum where people who are actually doing it talk about it, and I go there alot.

I would say that MDC is similar to how I was with the Anna Nicole show-I wanted to stop going there but I was uncontrollably drawn there.

Thanks Sue Anne, I'd love to compare notes as I learn what does and doesn't work for us.

I have a similar unrealistic dream. Well, I couldn't live like the people I know who are *completely* off the grid, but the simpler the life and the more self-sufficient, the more attracted I am.

I haven't looked on their forums but have read the magazine a few times, usually at the gym. While I think there is some helpful information in there, it seems to draw on a fear of mainstream "stuff". I think that one of my cousins must read it religiously. But really, it bothers me that fear or mistrust is such a basis for decision-making. Maybe it is just the issue or two I thumbed through...

I have never seen anything like this in my life. I cruised this site for about 10 min. and found the following:

                        What age should you wean?

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My son is eight and still nurses for comfort. Whenever he is sick, falls down or can get his way, he wants to nurse. My husband does not have a problem with it and I'm not sure when I should force the issue. My 2 year old daughter sort of stopped on her own and has not come back to it? What age is the right age? Help!

So in the interest of this being the debate forum...

Where do you draw the line? Not as far as what you'd be comfortable doing yourself, but what squicks you out seeing/hearing about other people doing?
