By this reasoning then -- when does medicine and science have a roll in "life?"

What if a woman is unable to carry a baby to term physically? Can she protect herself or is she "interfering with what is supposed to be natural?"

When some women take various medicine during pregnancy (doctor perscribed) is that "interfering with what is supposed to be natural?" What if the unborn baby's life is dependent on such medicine?

I think NFP is the right choice for some based on certain beliefs they hold dear. I respect that. To think that BC is wrong just boggles my mind.
Further, by this reasoning, IVF is "against the natural cycle of life".
Hence the reason the catholic church is against IVF

We're done having children, emotionally and physically. The risks of me being able to carry another baby to a safe gestational development are pretty slim, so I don't see any logic in risking getting pregnant. We wanted two kids, and miraculously got two healthy ones. Our high-risk specialist told us flat out on our first visit, "The only thing worse than having one brain damaged baby is having two." Why tempt fate?

Maybe it's selfish, but I LOVE spending time with my little dudes. They get a lot of love, time, and attention from DH and me, and that completely satisfies my maternal instincts. I don't want to share my mommy time with anyone else; "They 'complete' me"

I think birth control is wonderful.

I was on the pill for quite a few years, and once I was off and actually got a libido, I knew I would never go back on any hormonal type of birth control.

The sponge was good for us, until it went off the market. Vaginal contraceptives also worked well. I don't think I was ever the most fertile myrtle, though, because we took lots of chances and never ended up with a surprise pregnancy.

DH had a vasectomy 2.5 years ago (and never went back for the final semen analysis ) so we don't have to worry about it now, or at least that's what we think!

I have had friends who use NFP, and I think that is great. However, during residency, if DH was home, awake, and I was awake and in the mood (that went without saying for DH ) there was no way we were going to stop because it wasn't the right day or whatever.

Mostly I am glad all of that is behind us!

Sally, couldn't agree with you more.

At SO's med school orientation, they talked about sex and NFP being a great option for BC. He told me this the other day and I looked at him like he was insane. He quickly said, "NOT that it's for us! We're going to be extra careful. But later, LATER, it could be an option."

                No. Haha.

(Actually, they talk about sex all the time. I posted about that in the Pediatrics Forum.)

They just said that it was pretty accurate and works well when done correctly. Still, I thought it was wierd that they would even suggest it. Maybe I just heard it out of context and it was geared towards the married couples, I don't know, but I was surprised too.

                  Stella,

What are they doing up there (at SO's school)? Serious question, why would the standard medical school orientation have anything to say about BC to it's students?

actually - I do think I would have reacted. I don't think it's the medical school's place to be offering BC advice to their students.

as for why I react differently to NFP as opposed to other forms of BC for regular use, I think it's b/c of what is involved for it to be 99% effective. Think how many people screw up taking a simple pill every day! How many people allow themselves to be "swept away" in the moment? For your average person out there, it's not as effective - either b/c they're not as careful, as attuned to their body, or as committed to it as you are (or various medical reasons). I also don't think of condoms as reliable BC, and when people tell me that is their sole method, I have a similar reaction as I do to NFP. Too many chances for ... error. If someone really isn't open to a 'surprise', then condoms alone should not be used (IMO).

Thats one of the reasons why they say NFP brings husband and wife closer together, because it is a process that both of them have be aware of the womans body. The husband needs to be involved as much as the wife does, creating an even greater bond between the two.

Okay, bottom line I'm just irritated by people unwilling to take resposibility for their own bodies and try to blame a drug or a natural birth control method.
Completely agree with you on this. While we know some who got pregnant while on BC, they fully admit they didn't follow instructions. I couldn't even bother with taking a pill every day, so can't even fanthom doing NFP.

As for which method is best, it's same as with religion and abortion. Do what works for you, as long as it's safe, you're willing to take responsibility fo ryour actions and your choice doesn't negatively affect others.

Of course these people do keep my hubby in business...so forget the birth control, everybody get out there and have unprotected sex!

I say "no way" to NFP as a method because I don't trust it or my body enough to feel that I'd be doing everything in my power to not get pregnant. Responsibility is my major issue with all of it.
