  • Considering Career Options...

Some of you know that I've been going back and forth on career issues now for awhile. I have been considering several different options that would also fit with my need to be home as much as possible with my children...particularly now while they are so small....and of course with our caboose on the way....I will want to be home full-time for a little longer.

That being said, I continue to volunteer a couple of hours a week to give myself an outlet for me, etc...

Anyway, I have recently begun considering the idea of going into pharmacy and getting my PharmD...It would be an intereting mix of science and working with people...and there are so many fascinating career options....clinical, retail, research...the list goes on. I have a fairly strong science background and so this really seems like a great idea.

In any case, I have been looking into Creighton University and I'd like to get some feedback. Creighton offers students the option of doing the didactic portion of their program through distance education. You are provided a preceptor, have a lot of contact through email/fax/telephone/chats, etc with your professors...but you do most of the learning of the subjects throught their online classroom format: streaming audio, etc. I have taken 2 dl courses in the past and enjoyed them....it's tough to stay motivated when you aren't in the classroom..but it is possible to get a lot out of the classes.

The thing is...you can do this program full-time or part-time...and all labs that require you to go on campus to Nebraska are done in 2 week blocks in the summer. So...you do the didactic work for that particular class and then you spend 1 or 2 weeks from 8-5 in the lab as opposed to an hour or 2 a week for 14 weeks on-campus. Thomas feels that he would be able to take vacation during that time if we would get to that point.....

All of the clerkships then (at the end of the study) are done just like on-campus students, but they are arranged in your local area through the U.....and the hospital that Thomas works at (just down the road from us) is fully accredited and has pharmD students working there. By the time I would hit clerkships, the baby would be in Kindergarten.

Can anyone give me some feedback? I think my biggest concern with the distance learning format for the didactic portions is that it wouldn't be taken as seriously...though it wouldn't show up on my transcript that I'd been a distance student. I know that during grad school though there were classes that I only attended for the exams...It was just better to go to the library and check out books and read at home than to listen to the prof....so being on-campus wasn't all it was cracked up to be. It would be great to be able to be oncampus and be involved with other students as well...but would it be worth the trade off of having to put the kids in after school care?

I don't know..I'm just swinging back and forth on this....does anyone have any thoughts pro or against this that they would be willing to share? I wouldn't start the program if I decided on it for at least another year or so.....of course...if I want to do the on-campus program at the Uof MN I couldn't start for another 8.....

    Kris,

I just checked out the website...This is it. You must do this. This lies in your interest area, it is incredibly marketable, and VERY family friendly. I know a pharmacist in Ohio who works only one day a week until her kids get bigger. They are in such a need of pharmacists that most companies will work with you...

    Go for it!

          Kris,
I think this sounds like an great idea! You are clearly very interested in it and it would be a good match for your science background and your enjoyment of teaching (one-on-one patient education if you went the retail route).
I wouldn't worry one bit about the distance learning part. Aren't pharmcists really in demand right now?

              Gooooooooo for it.

You are meant to be working with people- despite that sciance background of yours.

and let me remind you that we pay our consulting pharms a boatload of cash to come to the group homes, review meds, make sure the staff are aware of side effects and to sign off on the physicians orders. We typically pay $50 per home per visit. and all because we can't find people who are willing to come to the houses to review the meds. Talk about a family friendly job!! You pick the days, the times and the # of homes you're willing to be responsible for! $300 a day- not too bad!

Wow! If you did what Jenn mentioned above just part time (10 days a month) you would be grossing $36,000/year. Not bad for a part time job - especially if you enjoy it!

I also say go for it. Russ' uncle is a pharmacist and he makes GREAT money and only works a few days a week. He went retail at Fred Meyers and he spends a lot of time playing golf and visiting his children who are all grown. I had a friend with three young children who went the pharmacist route. It worked out great for her and she has a very flexible schedule.

I think that you should go for it also, if it is something that you're truly interested in. I don't think the distance thing will be looked poorly upon, PharmD's are in big demand. I worked at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas while I was an undergrad - they switched to an all PharmD program my senior year. With good PCAT scores you should be able to get into any program that you like and it sounds like you definitely have the interest. Also, with it being a long program I would vote for the starting sooner rather than later.

My father-in-law is a pharamacist and he has worked in everything from hospital administration, to retail, to specialty pharmecuticals and he loves his job. He also loves to talk drugs with my husband now that he's in medicine.

                    Good Luck!

That sounds like a great program Kris! I think you should go for it, especially if Thomas can arrange his schedule to work around your weeks in Nebraska. I think you should definitely go for it!!!

                        feedback

Gosh, you guys...I'm overwhelmed by the feedback. I have contacted the U and am waiting for more information to be mailed to me. What I did find out is that their distance students score as well on the pharm boards as their 'regular' students...so I think that speaks well for the quality.

Thomas is really, really excited about this too. He talked to a PharmD yesterday who is working part-time, is earning a decent salary and can be home at 3pm each day when her kids get off of the bus. This is exactly what I am looking for.

I will have to wait a little longer to apply....with the baby coming in November I'll need to be patient. Also...once the kids are in school and the baby is here...I can study for the PCAT while he/she naps.

Again...thank you so much for the positive feedback!
