RN here: I took the corporate route after several years of inpatient and specialty care in the Army, and it has been a different environment and learning curve for sure! But on my way to Medical School!

I'm a primary care Nurse Practitioner. It's a nice part-time outpatient gig that allows me to help people in the community, and have a lot of time at home to do hobbies & take care of finances, housework, cooking, and to be hubby's secretary.
Being a professional in my late twenties who graduated from a top nursing master's program, I often feel the urge to "rough it" full-time, but find NP's may be "used" as "residents" working 60+ hour work weeks, and I don't really want that lifestyle, and that wouldn't work great for my PGY-3 Anesthesia Resident hubby and my marriage.
Still trying to figure out what type of role I want career to have in my life--especially since we're thinking of starting a family in the near future. To be continued...

Hi Darling927 and welcome to iMSN! Feel free to introduce yourself further over on the Introductions forum
Your current situation sounds very similar to mine. I'm a clinical trials data manager at the same medical center my DH works at. It's also a part-time gig which is perfect because I still have plenty of time to indulge in other interests, do some volunteer work, and as you said take care of all the household and financial duties and be DH's secretary. I have no desire for the 60+ hour work week, or really even a 40 hour work week -- I like to spread my activities around a bit more. I enrolled in a PhD program some years ago but left when DH started med school. I've often considered going back now that he has an income but, again like you, am not sure I want career to take that big of a role in my life since we're thinking of starting a family soon.Wife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)

Hi niener,
Thank you for the warm welcome and I will definitely write more in the intro forum soon.
Just wondering--are you an NP too? I've been going on some interviews (some part time, some full time), and it's been grueling. I think that it may be best to just stick with working part time for now, since in this economy, there haven't been many healthy jobs being offered.
I hear you about dropping out of more advanced education programs (I did that too for a post-master's certificate; the last thing I want is more debt if it doesn't significantly increase my income). Part of me always wants to advance career-wise, yet another part wants to be a full-time mom. Isn't it complicated being a woman?!
If I had children, then that would make things clearer for me, but I still have 1.5 years to go before we try for kids...which is why I wonder if I should "rough it" for now. Then again, what's the point of changing my situation if I am going back down to part time in 1.5 years? Ahhh!
Anywho, time to go to my lovely part time job now, which IS pretty much healthy, and for that I am thankful.
Thank you for sharing your situation with me. I hope to hear more about your cat and puppy soon. I will share bout my two kitties later on the intro thread

I'm not in the nursing field, my background is in math and statistics. The PhD program I was a part of was a biostatistics program (i.e. big math geek). If I went back to school it probably wouldn't be in that though.
You'll find spouses here juggling every combination of career+family and in all stages of training. It all can be done, it's just whatever works best for you and your family.Wife of a surgical fellow; Mom to a busy toddler girl and 5 furballs (2 cats, 3 dogs)
