Just what I was going to say! If you want to do primary care, and like small towns, most states have programs for loan repayment if you work in an "underserved" area. That's exactly what some people want, so it works out well for them!

It's not just rural areas. There are primary care positions available in Madison, WI. (Granted, we're from WI so we are looking to stay here).

This website gives more information on the programs available through the government. Individual practices may offer their own spiffs.

Folks need to remember that the government jobs (the ones you agree to while you're still in medschool or early training) have STIFF penalties if you decide to back out. One of our old members went through that, and they had an insane interest rate and repayment plan b/c her husband decided that he didn't want to go work in rural KS. Right off the bat out of training they were paying $2000+ a month (not an accelerated payment plan -- the payments required!).

In short, be VERY sure you're up for all that is required when you sign on. Yes, that should always be the case, but this is one that I've heard of several people having very big second thoughts on, and it costs.

My husband got a "signing bonus" when he started, from the hospital. I think they may still do that, because it's hard to get family practice docs (at least good ones). It didn't pay it all, but a nice chunk of the loans. And we're in a fairly good size city (100,000) for Iowa, anyway.
