You've probably already gotten the gist of it from everyone else, but I'll throw my 2 cents in as well.

We did the one car thing for about 6 months this past year with DH as an intern and me working about 30 hrs/wk out of the house. Between the cost of the car itself, gas, and car insurance we actually saved quite a lot in those 6 months. Most days I would take him into work and go pick him up when he was done since I needed the car during the day (which was kind of a pain because that usually meant waking up at 4:30am, but it's only a 5 minute drive so I just came back home and went back to sleep), but it sounds like you wouldn't need it every day so you'd only have to do that occasionally. And as others said, I'm sure you could find another solution to the 3-4x you need to get to the airport. For your situation it sounds totally doable to me. Now that's assuming you guys don't live a ridiculously long way from his medical school.

Hey if you can swing it do it. We drive miles and miles in the opposite direction every day, so no advice here.

We are a one car family. We live in a city of 100,00 people so it's not too big to get around, but we work in different parts of the city. The bus system sucks, so we do rely on driving but somehow we make it work. Sometimes one of us will have to take a cab, but it's still so much cheaper than paying for insurance etc etc for an extra car. It is inconvenient at times, but it's doable. We just work it out on a day to day basis who is going to be taking the car that day, depending on who is going to be done work first etc. My husband also gets a ride sometimes from a co-worker. I think it really depends on your circumstances, but I think if you are creative and willing to make some sacrifices here and there, it can work.

Well, the car is dead. Transmission is shot and would cost significantly more than the car is worth to repair. I'm totally pissed off at this car's evil sense of comic timing -- 1st year med school, right before our wedding... I think we'll go one-car for as long as we can manage, until rotations start. Ugh.
