We have a CPA who prepares our taxes. With Dh's ownership interests in his LLC (building), the surgery center and his sole proprietorship in his medical practice, preparing our taxes has become much too complicated for me. Dh does not get any kind of income forms (W2, 1099, etc.,). Rather, our CPA calculates the income her earns and subtracts the ordinary business expenses to determine his gross income. I don't even see these business records. They go between his office manager and the CPA.

Turbo Tax until it gets more complicated. Even having an extremely small business makes it a pain now.

You know, I was just looking at ours again and I may still do them on TT, we'll see. But DH is employed (W-2) and other then moving expenses we don't have anything that out of the ordinary...

I'm having them done. I haven't done my own taxes in over 10 years and *this* year isn't the year I'll learn again. Maybe next year. I have no idea what a divorce does or how to list the two relief shifts I did...it'll probably be basic stuff for the CPA but I'm overwhelmed thinking bout it.

That'd be sweet! And *your* interview expenses should be deductible since you're looking to move from job to job within roughly the same field.

We used Turbo Tax last year, and it was great. We'll probably use it again until we're not on W2s anymore. We used to use H&R Block (actual office), and I was never impressed with them. However, one year things were really complicated (I was at the same job, but went from a hiring agency to being an independent contractor to being an employee with retirement benefits), so I paid the extra for their guarantee. Great move on my part. They made a big mistake (over $1000), and H&R Block cut us a check for the amount due to the IRS, even though it was money we should have paid, but it was covered because they didn't catch it when they filed.

I used the same CPA since 2006, but the firm totally dropped the ball regarding our 2011 taxes.
I researched it, came up with the numbers, then used TurboTax - it showed I was right on track, and I am pleased that we will not owe this year.

We had a CPA do ours last year. That was the first time we'd ever used one. We did turbotax alongside the CPA to see if it was worth it, and he got us an additional chunk of change (quadruple the amount of his fees!) than what turbotax found for us.

Dh has a w-2 and a k-1 (tax form for owner in a partnership), and we're using the CPA again this year to figure it out. We won't get the k-1 until later this month.

                      Turbo Tax
Since my job and my wifes are never in sync its a real pain.
She moves somewhere for school / residency / intern and I usually follow a few month behind.

Last two years we had 148 pages of forms included calculatin sheets.
Its a math thing so I actually have fun with it.

We have a CPA friend do ours. I'd love to do it myself, there is just never.enough.time. Maybe when all of the kids are in school.......

This is a totally random memory, but this thread reminds me of my dad doing our family's taxes when I was little. Both he and my mom were self employed, so I guess it was pretty complicated. He would have stacks of papers spread out all over the living room floor, and we knew it was pretty much taking our lives into our own hands if we messed up a pile!

Usually we use HR Block since we had nothing all that complicated (W-2s, student loan interest). This year the complexity of our taxes has increased with a home purchase, 5 jobs in 3 states between the two of us, a totaled car/new car purchase, etc. I could do it if it were just the house and the car, but all the jobs and states confuse me, so we are looking for a CPA. DH still wants us to do it ourselves; even though I think we might kill each other doing it, we probably still run everything through HR Block to give us a ballpark figure before we see the CPA.
