So are you saying call shouldn't be in a contract? That seems like a REALLY good way to get screwed as the doc especially if you are the newbie.

Like all things in medicine, it varies by specialty, location, and group.

Call shifts aren't specified in any of the contracts in DH's specialty in our area.

So if there is no call ratio how is call handled?

eTA: I wonder if part of it is because we are hospital employed? Another friends husband is signing a contract with the same hospital in a different specialty and his also has a call ratio clause.

Edited out above post for some privacy. In certain specialties, call ratios absolutely should be specified. There is NFW I'd let DH sign a contract that didn't have a clause about maximum call, pay for call that goes over the speciified number, and what exactly the hospital intended to do when the partnership minimum number went below a certain point. Too many docs have been the last man standing in a practice and it has had devastating personal consequences.
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

In DH's group, there's an average of 7 call shifts per month, give or take for vacation coverages. Some months people may have more and some may have less.

I think DH's are averaged by quarter or something, I don't remember. There are definitely month he has more like for some reason he's on like half the month of April. It will suck
