Wow. Milk ranges between 2.50 and 3 here. (Not organic, but hormone and antibiotic free) ground beef recently went up to 2.99 from 1.99. The local farms (grassfed) still charge an avg of 4-5 a lb.

      And yikes, Peggy!!!!

No one here believes me, but groceries in the Chicago area are much cheaper than either Columbus or Cleveland. When I visit my family, I stock my pantry and liquor cabinet. Honestly, it really is worth it.

Except lunch meat. 2x more expensive in Chicago than here.

I find it varies by item, but groceries are more money here, I think.

Groceries were so cheap in Chicago. Produce was lousy. Really terrible quality and always almost rotten. Even at Treasure Island. Ugh. Except for maybe corn.

Inspired by mrs K I works the coupons and sales at a store reopening. I did $180 for the week! I already had some meats at home and that doesn't include milk/eggs which we have delivered weekly from a local farm. I saw in their flier that they accept all coupons, including aldi.

I'm loving Walmart's savings catcher. Brilliant. Easy.

Oh hey, I'd been meaning to update this thread. Turns out my grocery/wine spending for October and November has stayed about in line with September. Ah, well. We're eating really well and primarily grass-fed meat and quite a bit of local veg so I'm fine with it.

I like that article. It goes to show that this lack of access to fresh produce, and this perception that fresh food is a luxury, while the overproduction of cash crops continues to be subsidized heavily and to skew affordable dietary choices toward calories from highly-processed corn and soy fractions, is a dangerous picture to the health of children everywhere.
