Ok, I've been thinking about whether to say this or not.. In real life I know I wouldn't. Yet you guys have spoken truth to me, so I guess I will share my different perspective....

And perhaps it is just different priorities. But you wanted your son to be able to live in the dorm, correct? Yet here is 350 dollars to spend on luggage and then the trip to the conference in Nashville. I guess I would have put that toward the dorm fund. I still have the same luggage that I got as a graduation present in 1985. Because our financial picture is so uncertain, we have chosen NOT to send my daughter and myself to the Annie Moses Fine Arts Camp in Nashville. We are not taking a salary this month. We are eating out of what we have. I'm going to try to spend as little as possible until we figure out how his salary will work out.

Now, I DO get that life is to be lived. We WILL be taking some kind of 25th anniversary trip in July regardless of how things work out. That only happens once. It needs to be celebrated.

I don't mean to guilt you. I don't. But this is in the financial forum and for those of you who are much earlier in your financial/marriage/medical journey, I will say this that it is "little" choices like this that determine your financial future. We are not panicked because of all of the choices we made earlier. He could retire and we could live off of what we have saved if we had to. I do think the bag is cute. I wish I could be in Nashville to see it. I may regret I posted this, I don't know.. But something to think about...

That is a good point, Spaz, and I'm glad you shared. We welcome and appreciate all respectful opinions! Splurges have to be balanced by cuts elsewhere, and it's always good to remember that!

You're right, spaz. That's part of my guilt. I will have to think about how I can balance this out.

I never splurge on myself ... and I probably shouldn't have. It felt so irresistible in the moment. I don't actually have luggage ... Just duffle bags.

I have a cello no one is playing. Maybe I will sell it. That will offset the cost ...

But you are right in your confrontation and I appreciate your honest feedback.

Thanks. I really, really didn't mean to be hurtful. Honest. And I have my own vices that I shouldn't do!!!!! Thanks for being so understanding... I'm trying to be better at speaking truth in love both on the internet and in real life... Most of the time, I just don't say anything....

Honestly, spaz, I see your comment as coming from a place of concern and not out of a desire to be hurtful. That's why I really have to listen. Sometimes people say things just to be right or edgy or whatever ... but you are pointing out the obvious recognizing how hurt I have been for my children about the dorm thing. I appreciate the honesty.

I found some reason to celebrate.

Spaz's comments really got me to thinking again about financial priorities and I wondered how I could cover the cost of the luggage. The other option was to return them. I discussed this ad nauseum with dh who felt I need luggage anyway and might as well enjoy the splurge. He's more of the splurge man than I am.

                      I decided to return them.

Then, I was logged into my personal bank account online and noticed my Wells Fargo rewards button. I haven't ever pulled out the rewards from my individual account. I use my account for groceries, school stuff for me, etc. I was stunned to discover that I had enough rewards to cash them in to not only cover my suitcases, but to have an extra $200! I kept the suitcases and put the $200 in savings.

I suppose I could have put the other part in savings too and returned the luggage but I got lured into the idea that I deserve a splurge. For better or worse. I love the luggage and I know I'll get good use out of it.

It was so exciting to discover that I actually had money squirreled away that I didn't know about! It made this splurge ... well ... less guilt-ridden.
