I know this a bit untimely, but I just recently read the People magazine article which recounted Dylan Farrow's open letter to the NYT wherein she accused her father Woody Allen of molesting her as a little girl. Apparently there was a thorough investigation of these charges when she was a child but ultimately the prosecutor determined there wasn't enough evidence to go forward with the case. (These type of cases take an extraordinary amount of evidence to convict). Anyhoo, while I don't believe in vigilante justice or trial in the popular media, I find it pretty damning that Allen went on to *marry* his step daughter. Reports stated that they started "dating" when she was 21. Gag. To put it very mildly, Allen clearly has ...uh...morally flexible boundaries on what constitutes an appropriate relationship.

Allen isn't the first celebrity with allegations of sexual impropriety with minors: Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Roman Polanski. Yet all of these individuals went on to gain both commercial and popular success. While I don't think society should try these individuals in the press, I'm sort of surprised that they have all been able to eventually go back to business as normal. There isn't even a call for a boycott, etc. Compare this public nonresponse to a redneck reality star who WHEN ASKED, shared his backwoods opinions on homosexuality and a firestorm of controversy ensued. People posted endless ragey-rage rants about it on Facebook and then drove to eat some homophobic chicken that night at their local Chic-Fil-A.

I guess I'm just having a hard time with the manufactured rage versus some of the issues that might merit a more censorious response.

I'm curious to your take on all of this. If this convo becomes heated, I'm happy to have it moved to debates.

My take on this is: Hollywood is all about self-promotion and self-preservation and no one is going to back Ms. Farrow in the face of Allen. I am not sure why she put herself through this. I don't have a problem with her doing it, though. She certainly isn't afraid of a libel suit…hmm.

I try hard not to spend my money in support of public figures whose private behavior does not reflect my values. I am not talking about having different political views or personal habits or something like that. I mean values like: no porno pictures of your son's nearly underaged adopted sister, no anal statutory rape, and no anti-Semitic hateful spewing. So I do not purchase or even watch Woody Allen or Roman Polanski or Mel Gibson movies, for example. Maybe my bar is too high for Hollywood… But, why would I put my money in the pocket of a total douche? I get a queasy feeling just looking at them. And, to be honest, if I am going to invest my personal time in a movie, I would like a man I could kinda sort fantasize about. And I don't fantasize about creepy.

On the flip side, I see anything with Mark Walberg, who is a committed Catholic and a good actor. He made a crap load of mistakes in his younger years, including assault and jail, but he turned himself around and seems to be a good man. I am a sucker for contrition and redemption (kind of the opposite of Allen's story). Also, I like Pierce Brosnan--his wife, a former model, has gain a bunch of weight and looks somewhat ungainly now (pretty, but a lot different). But, he often comments on her beauty. That warms my heart. I even like Ben Affleck a lot more now that he has married the girl from Alias and seems to be a devoted husband and father. He and his wife seem like a healthy, non-exploitative real-life team (again, opposite of Allen and his nearly-underaged bride).

I never liked Michael Jackson and wouldn't buy his stuff regardless, and I don't know who R Kelley is.

I love MW but I have real issues with the fact that he is now dating Jenny McCarthy. UGH!

As for the Farrow case, it only came up again because he was given that lifetime achievement award, I don't know who or what to believe but I'm guessing its not him.

Houseelf, agreed. Hollywood is all about money and power and unfortunately, Woody Allen's got both. I remember watching a documentary about him and he was watching Soon Yi and said something along the lines of if he hadn't come along, she would've been on the streets of Korea, eating out of garbage cans (sorry, it's been a while so I don't remember what he said exactly). Um no, Mr. Allen. If you hadn't come along, she would've been living with her mother and family instead of posing in inappropriate pictures for you. From my experience, children very, very rarely make up things about abuse and the fact that so many people are willing to overlook them out of fear or awe is sickening and disturbing.

I have no doubt in my mind that Woody Allen is a sick twisted fuck and pedophile. I completely believe his daughter.

Obviously, I agree with you all, but what is kind of a mindfreak to me is that this situation has not received rage of other completely bogus celebrity crap through the years. I just don't get the disparate media hype.

I think that's because Mia Farrow was also wacky and the living situation (two houses on separate sides of NYC) was wacky for the "relationship" between Mia and Woody. I think Mia was the pioneer of adopting kids as accessories.

I feel sorry for all the kids in this screwed up situation.
