    I was thinking about this - if you're shooting in shutter priority mode, you don't have control of the aperture. When you press the button normally used to adjust the aperture, you are actually changing the exposure compensation. This might be your issue? Also, if you have your ISO set to "auto", there is an additional layer of variability. I usually keep my ISO as a fixed number (100 for super sunny, 400 for general use, 800 if I need to get a bit more, and rarely 1600 or 3200 unless for artistic reasons (personal preference).
