I also really want a nest thermostat, but that is a less than sexy gift. But one that keeps on giving!

How is nest better than a regular programmable?

Kris, how it's different from a regular programmable thermostat: it will connect to the internet over wifi, which allows it to know the temperature outside where you are, and allows it to be accessed through the nest website and/or phone app. You can check the temp in the house from anywhere, and reset it if you like. It also tracks exactly how long it's on each day, and what temp it was set to and when (my husband just an hour ago, I kid you not: "you set the temp up to 71 the other day?"). If you use it as intended, when you first boot it up, you just change the temp at the thermostat for a week or two when it is too cold or hot for you, and it learns your habits and will use that as its "schedule". That didn't work with our completely nuts EM residency "schedule", so DH programs it a little more manually, from the website. It also has a motion sensor, and if it hasn't sensed you walking around for a while, it goes into "auto-away" mode (if you've told it you want it to do that). It also has an option to figure out (based on history and the outside temp) how long it'll take to get to the target temp, and it'll start that many minutes in advance of when you've set it to get to the target temp.
