  • Dining chairs

DH leaned back in one of our crappy old Ikea dining chairs and cracked a joint (the chair's, not his ). They're scratched and beaten from 2 moves, I've had to nail the seats back down... basically, they need to go. Our dining table is a 100+ year old oak Empire style (I think) pedestal table. I think the chairs that would have gone with it originally were pressed-back (at least, that's what it was paired with when we bought it) and I'm not a fan of that look. Our overall style is kind of eclectic traditional. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do... I don't love the idea of buying new chairs at a furniture store, I feel like they'll look mismatched no matter what I do. So my one idea so far is to find single, mismatched chairs in different vintage/antique styles, and paint them all the same color - maybe a seaglass green or light teal or something. Thoughts? Other ideas? What styles might work? I might check out some antique and thrift stores next weekend, but I need to get a picture in my head before I start or I'll get totally overwhelmed! The table:

Like the mismatched in the same color idea. Or really any set of chairs where they all match could work. You could also go with the Ikea parson chairs. It is a lovely table.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

World Market typically has some really pretty, reasonable, unique chairs

We do mismatched wood chairs that I find on Craigslist. Only problem with this is that it can take a long time to have enough chairs. We are still in the "not a lot of chairs" category.

I have 8 dining room chairs in 3 different styles... They all need to be repainted so that they coordinate.

I inherited a set of 12 matching dining chairs. I kind of hate them - but having a set of 12 makes it so hard to let them go. Now that we aren't strapped for cash, I may put them on Craigslist

I love the idea of mismatched/matched chairs. Good luck finding cool ones!

Have you tried estate sales? A friend of mine here loves to shop them and has found several great things, I haven't caught that bug yet.

Yes! Slightly different color, and I don't love the styles of all those chairs, but definitely that idea. Would you believe I haven't seen that picture before!? I've been looking on Craigslist and not finding much of anything yet. I guess I will do some thrift and antique shopping this weekend, but I'm not in a big hurry since we still have 3 working crappy chairs. I'll probably paint those too, while I'm at it, and see if I can get a little more life out of them.
