  • Confession thread: stylist expenses.

OK ladies, about two years ago, I could no longer successfully color my hair at home. It just wouldn't stay in. I went to the salon and the girl told me that I had some white hairs around my face and that older hair needed stronger product than was available over the counter.

I have found a girl I love. She gives me the best haircuts ever and finds that perfect shade of blonde, which apparently is difficult. I can't stand platinum blonde and ash washes me out. Natural blonde is damn hard to create! LOL. Anyhoo, I have to go about every six weeks and the cut, color, highlights costs about $140 with tip. Yup. $140. This feels....high. Not saying she doesn't deserve it because she is a miracle worker, but holy, moly, I went from paying about $30 for haircut plus $9 for a box of color at the drugstore to 140.

What services do you get? How much do you spend? How often?
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

    Seriously? Don't worry about this.

Do you feel better about yourself because of the great job she does on your hair?

Can you afford this without negatively impacting the family finances?

Do you another secret, expensive vice that you are blowing discretionary income on that makes this one "too expensive"?

For cut, color & highlight with someone that gets your hair that is priceless! I also agree with HOW. Just color and trim is that much here and I know it is way more in bigger cities. However, I hate spending that much on my hair and I HAVE to color every 2 weeks. I compromised and do a touch up at home and see the stylist every 4 weeks. If it is enough of an issue for you, I would ask her if you need the highlights every time or if you can just do the color/highlight every other time without the styling/cut.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I pay $150 for cut, color, blow-dry and than includes tip. I need to go every three weeks but only go every 12-14 weeks because I can touch up on my own in between since I have a simple all over brown with no highlights.

*ducks in with head down and whispers* I spend $25 once a year. I don't even get it washed or blown dry, so the cut is 15 and I give a 10 tip. I color it myself.

Yep. Totally need to polish my look. I'm a mess anymore!

Don't sweat the $$ if it makes you feel fantastic. I know that you don't go hog wild on clothes and shoes (except running shoes! ) so please don't feel bad about the hair! I bet you can stretch the highlights to every 2-3 months.

Yeah, $150 for cut and color without highlights, here. I go every 12 weeks, and don't really need it more often.

$150 includes a $20 tip. I try to go every three months. It's impossible to get there more frequently. I get a 2/3 foil and cut.

$175 for a cut and full highlights, plus a tip. I go once every 8 to 10 weeks.
I used to go to someone cheaper, but she just didn't do as good of a job. I figure life's too short to walk around with a hair color I don't really, really love.

$60 every 6 months. Cut only. I'm lucky I have a hair color I like naturally (and I may not always...I know that) because I'm way to busy/lazy to go get it done.

I don't color, because I know I don't get to salons more than once or twice a year. I did step up from Great Clips to the salon here in town, and have actually seen the same stylist 3-4 times in a row now, which is kind of a treat even if she does gently scold me each time if it's been more than 6 months. I don't actually remember how much...I think it's $40 for an adult cut, $20 for a kid, so if DD and I go together she bundles it to $50 and I usually tip around $10 IIRC.

                              All this.

I don't see a stylist regularly because it's not a financial reality for us right now and I'm lazy about my hair and know I wouldn't upkeep like I should anyway. I get a $40 cut once, maybe twice a year in a good year and occasionally highlight at home at the beginning of the summer.
