Gifts for Him That Aren't Lame?

I always feel like I miss the mark and those magazine lists are ridiculously generic. Aside from sex, what do men want for holiday gifts? I've been trying to keep a running list of cool things that hubby requests or may like.

Usually I strike rich with nice emergency chargers for tech devices (think Jackery, Anker, etc), nice headphones or earbuds (he kills a pair once every few years), underwear that he won't go and buy for himself (I always have good luck with bundles at Ross or TJMaxx).

Yeah, see he's not a tech guy. Remember, we still use our VCR. He hasn't even programed the fitbit I gave him for father's day. He asked me to do it and I would but he took it apart and scattered the various instructions and attachments all over the place.

I was thinking of a hammock, a large tent (so he and the boys can camp in the yard like the boys have been begging)...but both of those I'll have to hold until father's day. There's always clothes but *yawn*. He has a million tools and gadgets and doesn't seem to treasure any of them. Then there's toys like a portable ping pong set or fitness equipment that will go unused. I was thinking of that tile key finder thing but does he have to know where his cel phone is to use it?

[MENTION=852]fluffhead[/MENTION]. I literally had every one of those things on my list. Not lame? I mean, I even got him the socks. I also got a handsome cross body satchel and metal collar stays which he will probably laugh at.

I got DH a tiny flying helicopter one year (like $30) on Amazon. The kids were obsessed with it and they flew it around the house for weeks. It didn't last forever but he loved it.

What else?

Knife skills class (surgeons...)

Gift certificate for skeet shooting with a buddy (he loved that)

Nice slippers

Good scotch/glasses/whiskey stones

National Geographic

Whittling tools and a book

Fishing stuff / biking stuff - not so much in residency.

This year he's getting artisanal flour and a bread proofing box...bc we are weird and have gotten super into making sourdough.

I got hubby socks one year, at his request.

We're pretty terrible at gifts though. If we don't buy stuff ourselves, we get pretty specific about we want. He got a new car, I'm getting Tieks. I told him I'd get him something else too, but he hasn't told me what he wanted.

Dh wanted an electric n scale train this year. He also picked out some books. Past items winners have been leather/real fleece slippers, headphones, puzzle challenge games (metal ones and magnet balls), custom made leather gloves, James Bond movies on DVD.

I did a themed gift for Hanukkah one year. Various coffee-related things with a coffee pot on the 8th night. It was fun.

What about tickets to a show or concert?

We are horrible with gifts because we buy all the little things we need and can't really afford anything big.

DH always likes to get socks and slippers. I feel you. DH is tough to buy for and all those lists are not helpful at all. Since he doesn't have much fun/free time in his life I like to get him a small toy. It is also a bonus that it's usually something he can enjoy with the kids. I've done a number of remote control flying object, RC car, balsa wood plane with the rubber band. He and DS picked out a rocket at a hobby store on their own to play with and it was fun except it went so high into the clouds on the first launch we lost it. This year I got him a google cardboard thing from amazon. It was cheap and is supposed to be a fun way to try out virtual reality stuff.

DH got a gift card to a hobby shop earlier this year, and he ended up buying a tiny little drone. It's fun to fly around the house! It did get a hair wrapped around one of the blade shafts, which made it hard to control until we figured it out and fixed it, but overall, it's pretty cool.
