  • What are you doing to meet people in your new area?

I'm lucky that there's a fairly active significant other group at my DH's school and I've met many people through that organization. The fact that the island is so small is also very nice because I run into people I know everywhere I go. I also befriended a former coworker and another tenant of our landlady's.

I know this isn't helpful for most other people because it seems I stumble onto potential friends everywhere. I have no idea what I'd do if I had to go out of my way to meet people. Thank goodness I don't have to.

I joined a bunch of groups through various organizations, took classes (though I never made any friends through those), and met people through volunteering. I also got active in my alumni club. It took a long time, but I finally made friends.

It sounds like you're on the right track!!!!

          Nothing. I'm anti-social and don't like people.

Seriously, though. I haven't done anything to really "meet" people. I'm just trying to get some of the ones I've met to leave me the hell alone. (I hate my neighbors.)

We hang out mainly with DH's classmates and their families. We can all usually relate to each other since we're all in the same boat and have a good time together.

I sunbathe in a speedo at the end of the driveway, meet lots of people that way.

seriously however, a med-playgroup has been great to meet people.

I've done a lot of things with the kids and met people that way. Parents are always looking for people (it seems) who have well behaved kids and like to socialize a bit. It's adult time/family QT all at the same time depending on how old your kids are. I've actually clicked with about three women so far and their spouses are really nice too.
                • I've joined a moms group.
We've invited about 10 families over for dinner since we moved. Most have asked us over too.
We get out on weekends -- have run into people DH's knows through the hospital with their families and we've had coffee or ice cream with them and their kids spur of the moment.
Attended 80% of the social functions we've been invited to.
I'm starting a movie group this month at our house this month. We'll meet once a month and gab, watch a movie, and hopefully have a reasonably interesting discussion about said movie. We'll see how it goes.
                  We've joined a CC.

Aw, now, come on, leave Flynn alone. She's admitted she has mixed feelings about the country club. Let's all be good sports and stand in line behind me to make fun of people.

I wasn't making fun - I'm serious, I love golf and would love to have someone else to talk golf with.

Sorry if it came off that way.

ETA: I'm sure we'll belong to a CC someday, we thinking of joining an athletic club here that is close to one but without the golf course.

I am going to try and push myself to join up with groups etc to meet people. But honestly, because we are only here for a year, I think I am too lazy/socially imcompetent to look beyond the hospital, work (when I get a job) and imsn!
I am looking forward to socialising with DH. In Ireland I was always the "single one" at everything!

PLEASE, Cheri, make fun of me. I DO. Really --- I DO!!!!!

Golf is SO SILLY -- the movements are NOT intuitive, very awkward, and this is coming from someone who has no problem diving in sand, spread eagle or in any other compromising position -- for anything resembling a volleyball.

The funny thing here is I LIKE TO HIT THINGS.

Monday the female golf pro and I are going to set up some private lessons. There's only so much you can learn on the range at a seminar.

My goal is to play 9 holes by the end of the summer and not have anyone ask me to leave.

Flynn, golf is HARD! I have to say that my 9 year old is far, far better than I am.

It's one of those things that I would eventually like to not suck at. I don't think it is possible for me to be good at it, but I would like to not suck.

Flynn, you are naturally athletic - once you get some one on one time with the pro you'll be fine. I bet you pick it up easier then you think. Just a warning it gets addictive.
