  • "If you can afford sushi...

...you can afford a sitter" is what some sad, ugly man said to a friend and I who had gone to sushi for lunch with our children this week. We were quite the caravan, but certainly not disruptive. No one was melting down, everyone was happy and the one mobile child, DS 4yo, was very excited about eating sushi. This place is a niceish place, but certainly mid-range. I have seen older children there for dinner, so two babies and a kindergartener for lunch seemed totally reasonable to me. The servers wear T-shirts for God's sake. And frankly...its lunch! As far as I'm concerned there aren't too many places in Milwaukee that I would feel are off limits to my children at lunch.

My friend, who received the comment directly, responded by telling him that was a very rude thing to say. I responded by complaining loudly about misogyny for a few minutes. :fight: I considered dumping the bottle of breast milk I had brought on him or his food , but figured I might be arrested...bodily fluids and all.

The resturant itself, by the way, was very accomodating and our server was sympathetic...

          Are you kidding me, Caitlein?

Last week, I was getting my hair done at a salon here in Chicago, and as I was getting my hair washed and my head massaged ( ), this lady rolled a stroller in with a screaming baby to get her hair done. So much for a massage.... But you know, if you have a problem with other people, then go sit in your basement with the tv on mute and don't pontificate about how other people should live their lives to accomodate you.

I'm sorry you had to deal with a jerk like this!

Then, I am an asshole too. A work colleague with whom I do not get along approached me at the wedding, pointed to his watch and sarcastically said, "a little late, are we?" My response: "A little under-dressed, are we?" (He wasn't wearing a tie."

Good for you Alison. I only think of witty come-backs approx. 20 mins too late.

I'm glad you didn't dump the breastmilk. You worked too hard to make that stuff to waste it on the likes of him.

                        I hate stupid people...

To buy a little time, if I don't have a good comeback, I ask "what kind of thing is that to say?" I find that people don't really know how to reply to that question. And when they do say something, it's usually really dumb, and you can come back with something clever. I have clearly given this too much thought.

I admire all of the level-headed responses that people have proposed... as for me, I would have been sorely tempted to come back with a short, simple and to the point "f*ck you!"

Oh, but I guess with the kids right there, that wouldn't be such a good idea. :P

When all else fails, that's a good response too.
