    Re: Migraine help

My daughter got a script for cyphroheptadine (Periactin EQ) for migrains. Thank God she hasn't had to take many. When she feels something coming on, she goes to sleep, which is what she's supposed to do. The medicine helped her, she said, but... who really knows. She's 11 with totally whacked out hormones.

      Thanks for all your input.

I never had these as a child, Peggy, and it must be awful to get them when you're that young. How often does your daughter get them?

        Re: Migraine help

Not often. When she first started her period she got them every 3 weeks or so, maybe 2 times a week. Now that she's a bit more "settled", it's not often at all. It's almost easier for her, I think, since the onset of the migraine makes her so tired, and she simply goes to sleep. Us adults with other responsibilities have to sort of function in spite of...

I'm hoping she doesn't get them again. For girls it's not uncommon that it just happens at the onset of "womanhood"....

          Re: Migraine help

I heard that there's a new migraine medicine that is also an appetite suppresant and most women who take it end up loosing weight. As for over the counter, DH and I go through family size bottles of Excederin Migraine like it's candy.

Heidi, I went to CVS right after I posted that and looked at the ingredients on everything. In the end I just bought extra strength tylenol and caffeine pills. SO came over knowing that I had a headache with BC powder and made me take that instead. I gagged and almost threw up from it. Gross. But it worked. I still won't be taking that again, it was awful. Blech!

It comes as a white powder wrapped in folded paper that you spill onto your tongue. I guess it hits you better that way but a) it looks so much like drugs I couldn't help but laugh and ask SO if he knew what he was giving me and b) it tastes like shit!

Maybe the threat of taking it again will keep you from getting another headache.

BC powder IS gross! It's like chewing up an aspirin. Gag.

They make it in an orange flavor in Germany, and it is tasty!

                            Re: Migraine help

I've had issues with migraines and severe headaches since 4th grade...until recently! Since my husband is in dental school, I paid the clinic a visit, and he made me a splint. It's somewhat like a retainer I sleep in, and it's been amazing! In the past I had migraines once a week and headaches about every day...they've been cut to a migraine every couple of months and headaches just a few times a month.

My headaches were due to tension, so the splint has worked wonders relaxing my mouth! I also cut down on any gum chewing, and that's helped too. I sometimes pop it in after a stressful day or while sitting at the computer...it keeps me from tensing up my jaw...which keeps headaches away!

Ask your dentist about this! It's been lovely for me!

I'm approaching the 16th hour of a complex migraine. It's been a year since I had one of these so I'm not on any preventive medication. I've got severe headache, poor concentation, visual auras, photosensitivity, pins & needles in my arms and face (mostly on the left side but it's now moved to the right), and nausea. Last night, I had numbness in the left side of my mouth and lips -- like I'd had a shot of novicane -- and went straight to bed after dinner. No question here. I've tried everything non-prescription suggested in this thread. Just venting my misery.

DH ahasa long history of nasty migraines and swears by this: as soon as he feels one approaching he chugs 2 Red Bull and downs some ibuprofen.

On an OB rotation he had a laboring mom in the beginning stages of a migraine so he had someone run to the cafeteria (or doctor's lounge...don't remember) and grab a couple Red Bulls for her while they someone else got her the ibuprofen. They thought he was nuts, but it worked like a charm.
