How do you keep a toddler warm when you plan to be outside for several hours in 30 degree weather? Kris, please don't stone me!! Seriously...last weekend we went to a Mardi Gras parade and had Daegan dressed in a tanktop onesie with a long sleeve oneise on top. He had on legwarmers, a big ol' cloth diaper, and long khaki pants. He had on socks and shoes, a hat and mittens and then a thicker/puffy-style coat with hood on over that. When I was holding him, I could keep his mittened hands tucked between us....but when I got him home and undressed him, his little feet were like ice cubes! And I think they kinda hurt him a bit because he fussed and pulled them away when I tried to rub them gently to warm them.

Am I just not supposed to keep him outside in that kind of weather? Should I double up on socks and mittens? He seemed to want to run around and play (until he got tired)....so maybe I'm worrying for nothing??

Have I mention how much I dislike cold weather lately? I'm trying to convince Russ that he can only look at fellowships on the Equator.

Dress him in one of these with clothes under it as well:

Then if he needs more warmth, put the coat over that. It keeps everything sealed in. This is what I throw on when the kiddos play outside in the snow, they never seem to complain, the hands are covered too

I have two from LandsEnd I was gonna sell supper cheap if you are interested.

DS and I just came in after playing for a couple of hours outside ... it's snowy and 30 degrees here. He had on: a onesie, a fleece one-piece outfit thingy, snowpants, a winter coat, socks, boots, mittens and his hat. He seemed like he was fine. I think if you just dress him the way you would dress, he'll be fine.

Honestly, letting him run around is the best way to keep him warm...if he can move in his stuff We take the kiddos at the daycare outside in anything above 20 degrees. Their hands are always cold after 10 minutes and their feet too. Clothes that fit are important. The biggest mistake our parents make (and I totally get it) is buying stuff that is too big so they can get two years out of it, but then the stuff doesn't keep the heat in the way it should. I have seen all manner of glove and boot and the warmest kids are the ones who keep moving.

                Re: Cold weather moms/dads

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Thankfully, yesterday's parade was in 60 degree weather!! I did double up the socks, and I'm going to hunt down those bunting/union suit things....I'm hoping we're on the upswing as far as temps go. My biggest hurdle is the feet and hands but I guess that's "normal."

Letting him move is a great idea, and we did as much as possible....unfortunately last week a lot of the ground was muddy/wet and the parade is on a road so we kept trying to rein him in from running out into the street....

                Thanks guys!

lots of thin layers that can be added too or subtracted from. for little hands I use light weight gloves and then mittens over them, all dd's snow suits have mittens attached (no we don't get snow but with the icy wind you definately need snow suits on babies and toddlers at times). for babies (male or female) I put tights, a pair of socks with babylegs ( http://store.babylegs.net/s.nl;jsession ... tegory=147 )and then an extra pair of socks.

Michele, I layer the kids. For infants, toddlers and preschoolers I use thick cotton tights (yes, even for the boys). I have mine from Germany, but you can get them for girls in Blue. They are great because you don't have to worry if the kiddos kick off their shoes. Their feet will stay warm. I put their pants/jeans on over the cotton tights...and use thermal tops or t-shirts underneath sweatshirts for extra warmth.
