Re: Where in your list did you match?

I was rooting for #2 so we could move to Chicago... but DH got #1, which was the most adult I-already-have-a-good-job choice for us...

    Both of us were surprised.

9/12 Ophtho....we were shocked/disappointed/etc, but now it's not so bad....we only knew about the 'bad' parts of town/etc and there really is a lot more to Shreveport....I think had we known this much about the program/area, we probably would have ranked them higher

        # 1 for residency (when we expected to go to #2 or #3 )

#2 for fellowship (when we were counting on going to #1)

Total crapshoot. Don't plan. You'll regret it.

#1 in a military match... I think I would've died to have done a civilian match--ranking like 19 programs. Ouch.

Re: Where in your list did you match?

I agree don't over plan this (we all pretty much do though ) , and if you want a better understanding of how many people get what they want look up how many people interviewed last year for anesthesia, and how many spots were filled. It's a little more humbling when you look at the numbers that way. I say that cause you are seeing a lot of people respond as getting #1-3, and many many many people don't.

We ended up in one of the places we really thought would be good for us, and it has been. I agree with Lily, it's what you make of it that is more important. You could get #1 and find out things about the program you never knew that aren't good, and end up hating the city. For sanity sake you really just have to roll with the punches.

I agree w/Julie. You could assume that people who matched lower don't want to post about it in Grand Rounds.

#3 for residency (but was pretty much counting on this. #1 was his home program who only takes one each year from their institution -of course the #1 ranked in DH's med school class was also OB #2 was a reach program for sure).

#1 for fellowship (Yes, he did this to me on purpose )

1st choice on rank. I think he ranked 3. I didn't know him then.

ETA: Fellowship was not apart of a match system....

Re: Where in your list did you match?

It has been a little more tricky with having to rank so many 3 year and 4 year programs because most offer spots for the full 4 and the 3years. That's what makes this so confusing. But for the 3 year spots you put in your "A" list or "B" list which ranks your intern programs to go along with your 3rd year spot. AHHHHHHH!

I know to be weary of getting my head/heart set on any specific place. I just am a planner and I can't plan or control anything! It is a good learning/humbling experience... that I wish I never had to have!!!

Thanks everyone for the support and info!

Re: Where in your list did you match?

I agree -- the match can be all over the place. For the most part, once you match you need to love the one you're with. My husband switched residencies so that advice doesn't always apply. I think that most residents experience a point (or points) during residency when they really think their lives would be better had they ranked programs differently. Every program has its warts that you don't find until you go there.

:nothing: and to everything above. DH ended up matching to a program he interviewed with a few days before the ranking list was due and was too exhausted by the interview process to really pay attention. Matching there was a complete shock, but we loved our new location.

#1. But plan for anything to happen. We probably would've made any place work on our list. So, try to mentally prepare for every spot on the list. And drink hard on Match day no matter where you land.

We matched waaay down on DH's list. At the time I was d-e-v-a-s-t-a-t-e-d. I had not considered where we matched, and frankly didn't even know where to locate it on a map. We are on PGY2, and we are doing okay. Given our ages, and our kids ages I really wanted to land somewhere that we felt like staying. We won't be staying here. In retrospect, I am glad he matched in his choosen field... because he would have been miserable doing anything else.
