I guess I wasn't paying close enough attention in school! We went on a 5th grade trip to Mt. St. Helen's. I would love to go back to see how much (re)growth there is. It was still really dry there. No animals either!

It has changed a ton. Here's a US Forest service web page with some great information: http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/mshnvm/res...ant%20recovery

There's also a pretty cool Volcano Cam:

We went back to see it 2 summers ago. It is really impressive-- you can still see the downed trees from the blast radius. It's very worth the visit.

It is so close to Portland, I can see why Portland got so much ash. I think it's probably a very fortunate thing that the winds did blow the ash to the East-- there really wasn't so much damage that could be done in that direction. We got covered by about 4" or so of ash, at about 130 miles E. Can you imagine if it had blown north? Or out into the ocean?

Funny where a coffee thread can take you...
